When choosing your future workplace, it’s a good idea to reflect on which type of business you’d like to work for. Under ‘which type’, we mean a small or a large company, as there are pronounced differences between the two. At the same time, by no means does it mean that some type is better than the other – they just use different approaches to work, requirements, range of responsibilities, and remuneration. Therefore, let’s take a closer look at small and large organizations and distinguish the five key differences which could influence your future career choices.

Interviewing process

It all starts from the very beginning – the hiring process. Small companies oftentimes conduct it much faster than large ones, so if you desperately need a new job, this would be the perfect match for you. Since the hierarchical structure in small firms is not that extended, there are not so many people to be involved in the interview. In larger companies, on the contrary, there are usually several stages (up to 10!). Then all these people have to submit and compare their feedback, and only then the decision is made. This option is definitely for those who are not in such a rush.

Who said bureaucracy is gone

If you think that in our era of high technologies and rapid progress, bureaucracy has finally sunk into oblivion… you’ve never been so mistaken. It’s easier to manage the organizational issues if a company counts 50 employees, but what if there are 100 or more? Unfortunately, they still have to handle bureaucracy full of complex administrative procedures. No wonder stakeholders want to ensure that their employees fulfill their rules diligently. However, the good thing is that bureaucracy may well benefit both sides if handled smartly.

Family atmosphere 

The size of a company can matter for those who appreciate the home-like atmosphere at their workplace. Everybody knows each other, establishing trustworthy communication goes more smoothly, and team building is effective. Imagine the same in a company with over 100 or 500 people. In large companies, you tend to contact only the people in your department or team while the rest of the crew remains overboard. However, realizing that so many people put effort into the company’s success may inspire a lot. So it’s really up to you which type of community echoes in your soul and encourages you to do heroic deeds.

More chances for all-round development

People working in small businesses are usually multifunctional. They tend to cover a relatively more expansive range of responsibilities than their colleagues from large corporations. For instance, a UX designer in a small startup will be dealing with user experience research, prototyping, visual design, UX writing, and even coding a bit. Should you prefer expanding your skills in many types of work – go right ahead! For those who’d instead specialize in one particular area, working for a larger company will suit them best. There are usually big teams with people responsible for only one type of work.

Better working environment

Providing really cool benefits and perks to their employees is easier for a large corporation. Smaller businesses don’t usually have such financing, thus compensating it with more flexible rules and better work-life balance opportunities. However, corporations provide equipped kitchens, Playstation rooms, sleeping rooms, and gyms with showers. Hence, their workers never experience inconveniences in fulfilling their basic needs.

Career opportunities at big companies

Although small companies allow you to boost your skill set, large businesses give you more opportunities to climb the career ladder. It’s all about their hierarchical structure, which is more expanded than in a startup, for instance. Furthermore, employees get a chance to switch occupations in different departments. So they don’t feel stuck in the same job and always have an opportunity to self-improve and acquire new knowledge.

Making a difference

If you feel the urge not only to make money but also to make a major contribution to your company’s development, you’ll get that working for a small business. In larger companies, a more significant number of employees makes the competence on the way to your triumph more fierce.

Job security issues

It is the last but not the minor issue in our so unstable world right now. As we’ve mentioned, small companies’ employee-employee and employee-boss relations tend to be closer and more trustful. In large corporations, bosses hardly ever know what their subordinates look like, not to mention their personal life. It’s much easier to fire people you don’t know than those who are a step away from being your friend, isn’t it?
