Public Health Nurse

Under the supervision of the Director of Medical Services, and reporting to the Director of Nursing, the Student Travel Health Program Nurse, in addition to providing individual health care and education to students, manages all administrative aspects of the Student Travel Health Program (STHP) for students participating in off-campus overnight school-sponsored trips including review of student health records, administration of needed travel immunizations, and management of travel related medications. The prorated annual salary range for this position is $45,000-$55,000. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible 9-month position during the academic year. Benefits continue uninterrupted during school breaks and throughout the summer months. Travel Health Duties Communicate with students and parents/guardians about the STHP, including rationale for protocols, medications and immunizations and timeline for the collection of necessary documents and information Review health forms and other related documents efficiently to facilitate complete record keeping and anticipation of student related healthcare needs Under the guidance of the Director of Medical Services, determine which students need immunizations and/or travel related medications (e.g., malaria prophylaxis, traveler’s diarrhea, etc.) and coordinate procurement, delivery and administration to meet program needs. Schedule appointments regarding vaccine administration or travel medicine consultations and communicate with students and parents/guardians as needed. Collect and collate details of student health conditions, including medications and allergies, to prepare travel documents and health summaries for trip leaders and other relevant campus stakeholders to facilitate safe student travel off campus and contingencies. Serve as a liaison between the Health Center and relevant campus stakeholders regarding healthcare needs for students participating in school-sponsored off-campus trips Serve as a professional and reliable resource for students and their parents/guardians about the STHP, including information about potential destination-related health issues, vaccines and medications. Staff Nurse Duties Provide excellent, individual health care and education to Deerfield students and employees. Follow written and/or verbal orders per the Health Center Physician (MD) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) as per nursing standard of practice Independently recognize emergency situations and initiate appropriate intervention and treatment, send students to the hospital as appropriate and calling for extra help as needed Maintain a high level of nursing care, follow professional nursing standards and abide by the Health Center’s policies, procedures and Standing Orders with emphasis on clinical safety, quality and effective communication. Provide a professional, compassionate approach towards all students, their families, employees, and all others involved with the health and well-being of students Comply with the highest standards of patient privacy Document thoroughly and appropriately in the Health Center’s electronic medical record system Draw blood, call in prescriptions, dispense medications, administer immunizations and perform other medical procedures and tests as deemed necessary, and as ordered by the MD/NP Other duties as assigned Job Specifications Associates Degree in Nursing required, Bachelor’s Degree preferred, from an accredited school 3 - 5 years clinical nursing experience, preferably with adolescents in a health care setting Valid Massachusetts RN license Current BLS certification Effective communication, organizational, and decision-making capabilities required Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion and to serving the needs of a diverse community; Ability to manage, and sensitivity to, highly confidential information Ability to be flexible required Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment Ability to work with a wide range of people in a diplomatic and professional manner Ability to use a computer, MS Office suite, and EHR system Physical Demands Close visual acuity to view a computer terminal and reports Ability to stoop, crouch, kneel, reach, feel and hear Ability to frequently bend and lift Ability to stand and sit for sustained periods of time Ability to climb stairs Ability to lift or move up to 50 lbs. Ability to push/pull up to 200 lbs. Working Conditions The nurse is in an outpatient medical clinic as well as an inpatient infirmary. Occasional exposure to biohazardous materials and body waste.
