Job Description - Forestry Foreman (240000AZ) Job Description Forestry Foreman - ( 240000AZ ) Description Position Grade: 11G Job Type: Full-Time (Permanent) Location: Forestry Department - St. Louis, MO Examination Number: EX1028 Incumbents in this position perform, lead and directly supervise work crews engaged in performing a variety of urban forestry tree maintenance functions such as planting, trimming, removing, stump grinding and other related duties. These positions may require mandatory availability for 24‑hour snow and storm call. Essential Functions and Responsibilities Supervise work in the planting, trimming, removal and overall care of City trees. Conduct service ratings on subordinate staff members to evaluate work performance. Assist in the identification of hazardous trees and make recommendations on necessary services. Assist with training in relation to effective tree trimming practices and the associated equipment used on the job daily; ensure production standards are met and provide feedback to Forestry supervisors. Utilize work order documents for organizing daily work and delegating field assignments. Preferences Two years of recent full‑time experience in supervising or participating in the professional care and maintenance of trees and groundkeeping work. Associate's degree in Horticulture, Forestry, Arboriculture, or a closely related field. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Data Utilization: Ability to perform basic data analysis and review, classify, categorize, prioritize and reference data according to established standards. Human Interaction: Ability to persuade, convince, influence, train and monitor crew members to achieve desired outcomes. Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Ability to operate and maintain equipment such as motor vehicles, chippers, chain saws, pruners, trimmers, mechanical tools, loaders, aerial lifts; ability to repair complex equipment. Verbal Aptitude: Ability to interpret advisory data and information such as accident reports, work orders, production reports, maintenance records, operating manuals, maps, street guides and safety regulations. Mathematical Aptitude: Ability to perform basic arithmetic, calculate percentages and decimals. Functional Reasoning: Ability to apply principles of supervision, leadership, teaching, planning and coordinating to develop problem‑resolution approaches. Situational Reasoning: Ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in evaluating information against criteria. Environmental Factors: Awareness of potential adverse environmental conditions (dust, pollen, humidity, temperature extremes, noise, machinery vibrations, traffic hazards, wildlife and toxic agents). Physical Requirements: Ability to lift up to 100 pounds; push and pull objects over 100 pounds; stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance, bend and twist during work. Sensory Requirements: Ability to recognize differences in colors, shapes and sounds to distinguish objects, detect diseased trees and communicate with crews. Qualifications An Associate’s degree in Horticulture, Forestry, Arboriculture, or a closely related field; OR two years of supervisory or participating experience in professional tree care, including operation of tree maintenance equipment; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. License Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license while employed by the City of St. Louis and be able to present it upon request. Veterans Preference Points To be eligible, submit a copy of DD‑214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the application or upon request. The Director of Personnel may accept alternate documentation at their discretion. City Residence Preference Points City residents who pass the examination and do not receive any other preference receive a 5‑point preference on a 100‑point scale. An additional 1 point is added for city residents who receive any other preference. Residents must have lived in the City for at least one year at the time of application.
