PRINCIPAL SCIENTIST - STAFF SCIENTIST - Space Instrument Development - Durham, New Hampshire

05-00287 Who We Are: The SwRI Department of Earth, Oceans, and Space (located on the University of New Hampshire campus in the seacoast town of Durham, NH) offers exciting aerospace engineering opportunities. We offer a unique collaborative environment involving scientists and engineers at both SwRI and UNH. We design and fabricate spaceflight hardware, including new instrumentation and custom designed avionics. Active programs include science missions (funded by NASA and NOAA) in space weather, heliophysics, astrophysics, and Earth science, as well as commercial spaceflight programs. Objectives of this Role: Support the development and implementation of new instrumentation for space-borne and suborbital astrophysics applications, focusing on neutron and gamma-ray detectors. Provide systems support and technical oversight for a range of civil and commercial space projects. Support new business developments for both space-based and ground-based neutron and gamma-ray detectors. This effort will focus on a variety of applications, including astrophysics, homeland security and medical applications. Participate in the preparation of proposals. Develop (through mentoring and training activities) a more formal understanding of systems engineering and program management. Daily and Monthly Responsibilities: Responsible for the architecture, technical trades, risk tracking, technical progress, and execution of spaceflight instrument and spacecraft programs, and also suborbital (balloons and rocket) projects. Effectively coordinate teams of scientists and engineers from multiple institutions (including SwRI, University of New Hampshire, NASA research centers, and other outside partners) to achieve program technical objectives. Maintain the strong analytical and innovative skills that are needed to effectively lead complex multi-disciplinary and multi-institutional teams that typically include scientists, electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, and system engineers. Author technical reports as needed to satisfy contractual obligations and to maintain communications amongst team. Provide technical briefings to clients and SwRI leadership. Provide technical leadership and support of business development efforts, including technical interfacing with customers to define requirements, responding to Requests for Information (RFI), and the development of technical and cost proposals. Requirements: Requires a Bachelors degree in Physics or related degree field with relevant experience. 18 years: Experience in the design, development and calibration of radiation detectors for gamma-ray and neutron detection, especially scintillator-based detectors. 18 years: Experience in the design, development and operation of suborbital balloon payloads. 12 years: Experience in spacecraft and subsystem design, including knowledge of requirements development, including cubesat experience. 15 years: Experience in proposal development for orbital, suborbital, and ground-based systems. A valid/clear driver's license is required. Special Requirements: Work assignment is in Durham, New Hampshire.
