Senior Family Services Specialist (Foster Care)

Job Summary Senior Family Services Specialist in Foster Care leads and provides support and assistance to agency clients with personal, social, health and economic needs. Renders specialized and difficult casework services that may require a smaller caseload, provides case consultation, serves as the team leader in arranging services and helping clients use resources, and may lead activities of family services specialists and/or aides. Shares a 24‑hour on‑call rotation. Requires a bachelor’s degree in human services or a related field; a BSW or MSW is preferred, along with at least two years of related experience and a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Render specialized casework services, which may include family therapy. Serve as lead worker directing activities of family services specialists and/or aides. Act as central coordinator in a team approach to arranging services and helping clients use resources. Work in special program areas such as group work services, community planning and organization, and volunteer service and coordination. Participate in planning and evaluating agency programs. Provide training, technical assistance and guidance to social work staff. Implement service plans and document actions and rationale. Enter and update client and case data in multiple state data systems. Identify and develop resources to implement service plans. Maintain case records and prepare written reports of services, findings, and actions. Make decisions to remove children from dangerous situations and recommend institutionalization of adults and children. Provide crisis intervention in potentially dangerous situations. Share a 24‑hour on‑call rotation. Qualifications Education and experience: Bachelor’s degree in human services or a related field; BSW or MSW preferred. Minimum two years of related experience in human services or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Language skills: Ability to read and interpret laws, policies, regulations, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; responsive to inquiries orally and in writing; able to present information to managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Reasoning ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; adept at interpreting instructions and handling abstract and concrete variables. Certificates, licenses, registrations: Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. If Virginia license is not held, a certified copy of driving record from previous state must be submitted. Physical Demands Regular use of hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; speak or hear; light physical effort in sedentary to light work; occasional standing, walking, and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects up to 30 pounds. Requires ability to adjust focus. Willingness to work outside normal hours and respond to routine and emergency situations. Sensory Requirements Some tasks require perception of sounds and visual cues, and oral communication. Work Environment Exposed to outside weather conditions; moderate noise levels; may encounter adverse environmental conditions such as traffic hazards, violent individuals, communicable diseases, or rude/irate customers.
