Department Information Colorado Department of Natural Resources – dedicated to managing and conserving Colorado’s natural resources for present and future generations. Position Overview This position ensures a safe, pleasant environment for recreational activities by cleaning, repairing, replacing, and operating equipment, systems, grounds, facilities, and infrastructure at Cheyenne Mountain State Park. The role involves troubleshooting functions and maintaining compliance with OSHA, ADA, and other applicable guidelines. Management and Support Hire, train, schedule, and supervise temporary maintenance personnel and volunteers. Handle purchasing responsibilities, budgets, contractors, and maintain procurement records. Acquire and maintain required certifications and licenses. Use Microsoft Office, Google Suite, and basic GIS software. Submit regular reports and communicate with park management, state teams, utilities, partners, and the public. Specific Duties Trails Management Plan and complete trail maintenance tasks, resolve maintenance problems, and operate within budget. Design work plans and execute field work to achieve trail maintenance goals. Collaborate with Colorado Parks and Wildlife Development staff, contractors, and regional coordinators. Forestry and Invasive Weed Projects Implement the park’s forest management plan and supervise crew, volunteers, and contractors. Remove hazard trees and tree obstructions on trails. Consult with the Senior Ranger and Park Manager on forestry recommendations. Seek grants and manage funds for forestry projects. Support weed management plan implementation within budget. Archery Range Infrastructure & Facility Maintenance Maintain both archery ranges, targets, toilets, signage, and fencing. Operate and repair maintenance equipment (tractors, snow plow, mowers, power tools). Cross‑train and assist with preventive and controlled maintenance of buildings and facilities. Maintain certifications in water systems, sewer, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, painting. Supervision of Temporary Employees & Volunteers Interview, hire, train, supervise, motivate, and resolve conflicts for temporary staff and volunteers. Manage volunteer programs such as camp hosts, interns, and court‑ordered volunteers. Recommend corrective or disciplinary action when appropriate. Administration Prepare documents and reports: work plans, progress reports, employee evaluations, purchase paperwork, funding requests, volunteer program reports. Record work hours and maintain all records per policy. Training / Certifications Attend trade‑related training and self‑educate regularly to maintain proficiency and legal compliance. Obtain required certifications: Small Water & Small Wastewater, Herbicide & Pesticide, Trail Certifications, Sawyer Certifications, Qualified Supervisor (QS) with necessary endorsements, Class A CDL. Additional certifications as needed. Demonstrated experience relevant to the duties listed. State of Colorado residency required. Valid Colorado driver’s license if operating a state vehicle. Preferred Qualifications Current or former state experience relevant to this position. Basic GIS understanding. Trail maintenance experience. Forestry experience, including fire mitigation and chainsaw handling. Knowledge of noxious weed treatment. Archery range management and maintenance experience. Experience supervising, training, and working with volunteers. Experience operating heavy equipment such as backhoes or skid steers. Required Competencies Organizational and time‑management skills. Strong written and oral communication skills. Strong multitasking skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Suite. Comprehensive experience in construction, farming, ranching, resource management, landscaping, welding, facility management, equipment operation, electrical, plumbing, and/or carpentry. Conditions of Employment State of Colorado residency at the time of application. Must possess a valid Colorado driver’s license if operating a state vehicle; driving background check required. Compliance with fleet driving requirements. Availability to work weekends, holidays, and after‑hours shifts. May handle pesticides and herbicides. Travel may be required for meetings, trainings, and continuing education; overnight stays possible. Must be capable of operating boats, OHV, golf carts, and maintenance equipment such as mowers, chainsaws, weed whips, tractors, snow plow, backhoe, and dump truck.
