Custodian

The custodian position is available for both 202-day and 245-day terms. The role requires a high school diploma or GED and meeting suitability criteria for employment under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457.

The position is non-exempt and reports to the principal, director of facilities, and coordinator of facilities.

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities include:

• Good knowledge of tools, materials, and methods to safely perform work connected with resurfacing and shampooing floors. Ability to read, write, and follow instructions.
• Ability to do simple mathematics.
• Ability to lift, bend, stoop, walk, carry, and reach overhead.
• Ability to do groundskeeping and minor maintenance.
• Ability to follow written or oral instructions.
• Ability to supervise summer workers.
• Ability to maintain good interpersonal relationships.
• Ability to work outdoors in a variety of conditions and temperatures.
• Ability to supervise work of housekeepers.
• Ability to observe and report needs for maintenance and supplies.
• Ability to get along with students, teachers, and the general public.
• Ability to climb and work from ladders or scaffolds, and moving furniture, textbooks, and supplies.
• Adequate strength and dexterity to perform all tasks including lifting, stooping, and bending.

Job goal: To provide students and staff with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play, work, and develop.

Essential functions include:

• Keeping the building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas, neat and clean.
• Regulating heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to provide temperature appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity.
• Checking daily to insure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
• Sweeping and/or vacuuming classrooms daily and dusting furniture.
• Scrubing, hosing down, and disinfecting toilet floors daily and cleaning all sanitary fixtures and drinking fountains daily.
• Cleaning corridors after school each day and during the day when their condition requires it.
• Washing all windows on both the inside and the outside at least one time a year, and more frequently if necessary.
• Cleaning chalkboards as directed.
• Making minor repairs and performing maintenance duties as needed.
• Reporting needs for major repairs promptly to the principal.
• Reporting immediately to the principal any damage to the school property.
• Remaining on the school premises during established work hours, and during non-school hours when the use of the building has been authorized and attendance is required by the principal.
• Attending work on a regular basis.
• Reporting work-related injuries as required.
• Assuming responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights turned off, except those left on for safety reasons.
• Keeping an inventory of supplies and equipment, and requisitioning needed replacements from the principal on a timely basis.
• Moving furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principals.
• Complying with appropriate laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste and maintaining acceptable health and safety standards regarding the use of cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, etc. as directed.
• Adhering to rules and regulations.
• Checking daily to insure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy.
• Performing other related duties as may be assigned.

Terms of employment shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy Manual, Students First Act, and the Board's Salary Schedule – Custodian – Grade I (197-Day) and Grade II (240-Day).

Performance evaluation shall be in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel - GCRK and GCRK-R.
