Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) Profession: Nursing Specialty: Med/Surg Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Nights Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum one (1) year of relevant nursing experience License: Illinois state RN License in good standing Certifications: BLS (American Heart Association) Must-Have: BLS - AHA, Med/Surg Description: The staff Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designated time frame. The RN provides care to these patients via the utilization of the nursing process, nursing trends, technology, and available resources. The RN maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team. Completion of initial assessment upon patient admission and development of an appropriate plan of care in accordance with unit standards based on patient and family needs is required. The RN implements the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. Modification of the plan of care based upon continuous evaluation is an essential function of the role. The RN takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents. Effective communication with others directly and in private when necessary to resolve issues is important. The RN offers constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers and confers with colleagues to expand the knowledge base. Identifying personal learning needs and taking initiative to address them is expected. The RN fulfills all requirements of departmental competencies. Receiving patient Bedside Shift Report from another RN at the beginning of each shift is a key responsibility. Delegation of patient care tasks/responsibilities to assigned team members and validation of completion of those tasks throughout the shift is required. Documentation of basic RN patient care activities such as assessments, interpretation of vital signs, completing physician orders, and patient education must be completed. Meeting documentation standards for each assigned patient is essential. The RN will provide patient medications utilizing the 5 Rights: Right Patient, Right Medication, Right Route, Right Dose, and Right Time. Maintaining patient safety as the highest priority level includes ensuring compliance with safety measures such as fall precautions and pressure ulcer prevention. The RN maintains a positive attitude that promotes a healthy work environment and a healing patient environment. Promptly answering patient call lights is essential for effective triage and completion of patient requests and medical needs. Using critical thinking to evaluate the overall patient condition and identifying changes in patient status through nursing judgment are vital skills. Effective communication within the healthcare team promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and patient safety. The RN effectively manages time to enable a quick admission/discharge process and facilitates completion of patient testing to move patients quickly towards discharge.
