Patient Care Associate - Correctional Health Services *Full time and every other weekend (12am-8am)*

Overview Full‑time Patient Care Associate in the Division of Correctional Health Services, NYC Health + Hospitals, located on Rikers Island. Hourly rate: $24 per hour. Responsibilities Administers total care (bed bath, partial or complete). Assists with patient’s personal hygiene – skin care, mouth care, shaving, etc. Transfers patients in and out of bed, stretcher, and wheelchair, including physical and mechanical lifting. Positions patients and carries out range of motion exercises. Assists with ambulation and all ADLs as directed. Prepares patients for meals and assists with feedings as needed. Assists with unit admissions and transfer of patients. Makes beds and tidies patient areas for bedridden patients. Takes and documents all vital signs (BP, TPR, weights, intake and output) in electronic medical records; performs EKGs as required; fax abnormal EKGs. Performs dry sterile dressing changes and assists with other patient treatments. Administers hot and cold applications under supervision. Maintains intake and output records for oral and bodily excretions. Notifies MD/Nurse staff of any changes in patient status. Performs urine testing by dipstick and fractionalization. Chaperones staff in all clinical areas when requested. Maintains competency in nursing skills as detailed in the clinical performance checklist for Nursing Assistant. Assists with nursing follow‑ups and transmits necessary information to laboratory electronically. Anticipates and acts to maintain a safe environment. Performs job functions efficiently and uses resources appropriately. Waits for relief at change of tour by staff with the same title. Documents all encounters in Electronic Medical Records. Completes encounter forms every shift. Activities Perform HIV pre‑ and post‑test counseling. Perform rapid HIV test. Enter data in the rapid HIV database and electronic medical record. Fax rapid HIV testing information to the Nursing Office each tour. Perform quality controls. Perform EKGs and fax information. Perform nursing follow‑up as assigned. Assist with new admission processing. Perform venipunctures. Maintenance of Unit Clean equipment (thermometers, BP machine, EKG machine, suction machine, refrigerators, etc.). Stock and replenish supplies in all clinic areas, including stationery. Maintain cleanliness of treatment and exam rooms. Maintain security precautions with keys, locked areas, and equipment. Human Relations Skills Assists other employees where needed. Cooperates with supervisors, fellow associates, patients, visitors, and Department of Correction personnel. Maintains a friendly working atmosphere. Maintains a professional attitude and appearance, following the uniform policy. Accepts constructive criticism and makes appropriate behavioral changes. Utilizes established channels of communication. Recognizes and respects people as individuals. Recognizes limitations and seeks assistance appropriately. Communicates verbally and in written form. Working Conditions Patients require round‑the‑clock care; working hours include days, nights, weekends, and holidays. PCAs are required to stand for long periods and may be exposed to chemical and infectious hazards. Patients may be confused, irrational, agitated, or uncooperative. Physical Demands Ability to lift 50 pounds; lifting or transferring may involve up to 100 pounds. Ability to stand for extended periods. Fine‑motor skills required. Visual acuity required. Schedule 5 nights a week, alternating weekends, 12:00 am – 8:00 am. Qualifications Accredited high‑school diploma or equivalent (GED) required. EKG certificate. Phlebotomy certificate. BCLS certification and computer competency required. HIV pre‑ and post‑test counseling training/certification preferred. PCA/PCT/CNA certificate. Infection control certificate.
