Communications Specialist, Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance - Hybrid in Nashville TN

Job Summary The Communications Specialist supports the Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance (MVA) and the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center (VICC) Community Outreach & Engagement (COE) teams by developing and executing high-impact communication strategies that enhance visibility and engagement. The role involves planning, writing, and producing communications materials for diverse audiences, ensuring messaging aligns with stakeholder goals. Preferred Skills & Experience Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills for compelling narratives and health education content. Experience managing social media, digital marketing, and website content (WordPress or similar CMS). Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or other design tools. Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with varied audiences. Strong organizational and project‑management skills, handling multiple tasks independently. 2+ years of communications, marketing, or public‑relations experience, ideally with community engagement in healthcare, nonprofit, or academic settings. Master’s degree in Public Health, Communications, or related field (or 5+ years of related experience). Familiarity with AP Style and healthcare terminology. Experience using analytics tools (Google Analytics, social media insights) to measure impact. Background in public health and health‑literacy communication strategies. Multilingual ability in languages used in the service area. Key Responsibilities Develop and implement strategic communication plans aligned with MVA and VICC COE objectives. Collaborate with MVA, VICC COE, and VICC communications teams to promote key initiatives, research updates, and partnership opportunities. Translate complex health information into plain‑language educational materials for community distribution. Write, edit, and design print and digital content, including newsletters, press releases, reports, website updates, blog posts, and social media posts. Maintain brand consistency across all communications per institutional guidelines. Oversee production of multimedia content—videos, infographics, photography—for storytelling and promotion. Develop social‑media educational content across platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Support the creation of communication toolkits and training materials for staff and community partners. Coordinate newsletters, email campaigns, and other materials as needed. Assist public‑relations efforts, including media outreach and press coordination. Plan and support events, webinars, and educational sessions. Report regularly to leadership on status updates, programmatic activities, and outcomes. Serve as communications liaison, raising awareness of programs internally and externally. Write and edit content for medical‑center publications and special topics. Coordinate development, implementation, and maintenance of print and online content. Technical Capabilities Documentation & Writing Skills – develop engaging, well‑structured content aligned with institutional messaging. Customer Service – engage internal and external stakeholders professionally and effectively. Networking – build relationships with media contacts, community partners, and stakeholders. Communication – clearly and effectively communicate across various platforms. Training & Leadership – provide guidance and technical instruction to others. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s degree. Master’s preferred. Experience: Minimum 2 years of relevant communications work in community engagement, healthcare, nonprofit, or academic settings. Languages: Ability to read, write, and speak in languages in addition to English is preferred.
