Physician-Ophthalmology (Retina Specialist)

Summary The Omaha VA medical center is seeking an Ophthalmologist - Retina Specialist to join the Ophthalmology Section of the Surgery Service. The physician functions within an interdisciplinary staff consisting of physicians, optometrists, health technicians, administrative and clerical staff and is responsible and accountable for ensuring the provision of comprehensive surgical/clinical services and complies with established policies within the Department of Surgery/Ophthalmology section. Qualifications To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. United States Citizenship Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in medicine or osteopathic medicine from an approved VA school Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited specialty program leading to board certification Residencies approved by ACGME, AOA, or other recognized programs with at least five years of U.S. practice Enrollment in an ACGME/AOA accredited residency program; eligible as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) if otherwise qualified PRPs must hold a full medical license and be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis; not independent practitioners Proficiency in spoken and written English Board eligible or board certified ophthalmologist preferred; experience in comprehensive ophthalmology with basic retina skills including intraocular injections Physical ability to perform all job duties, including heavy lifting (45 lbs+), standing, walking, kneeling, and visual acuity requirements 13”–16” near and 20/20/20/40 far; hearing aid permitted Participation in a pre‑employment examination or evaluation as part of the pre‑employment process Duties Manage and treat a wide variety of ophthalmic conditions, including anterior and posterior segment diseases, glaucoma, diabetic retinal disorders, macular degeneration, and optic neuropathies. Provide retina subspecialty care, performing full spectrum eye care including retina surgery, membrane peels, vitrectomies, retinal detachment repair, macular degeneration interventions, and retinal injections. Perform cataract, YAG, SLT, and Argon laser procedures related to eye injuries and diseases. Create and manage patient orders for laboratory, imaging, pharmacy, prosthetics, and specialty consults via CPRS. Conduct patient examinations, diagnose conditions, and develop treatment plans. Operate independently in clinics and in the operating room with resident staff; supervise resident ophthalmology clinics. Maintain open encounters, consults, documentation, and clinic management in CPRS. Participate in quality improvement initiatives, peer review, and performance measures. Establish professional relationships with other clinical service providers and provide telephone and e‑consultations. Participate in a call pool with other same‑specialty providers and perform after‑hours and weekend attending call. Assist in managing surgical or clinical issues and attend required staff meetings. Teach and supervise ophthalmology residents; coordinate educational activities. Work part‑time 15–20 hours per week, 4 days per month, with flexibility and moonlighting opportunities.
