The Senior Master HVAC Technician installs, modifies, and repairs refrigeration systems (hermetic, semi-hermetic, screw, scroll, centrifugal units up to 1100 tons), air conditioning, VAV, ventilation, VRF systems, CRAC units, geothermic, reversible chillers, air and water‑cooled chillers, process coolers, ice machines, evaporative cooling, air compressors, and related control systems, including pneumatic, DDC, and building control equipment. This person performs advanced installation tasks involving assembly, testing, calibrating, and adjusting of temperature control and environmental control systems such as air conditioning plants, air environmental control systems, air distribution systems, and complex dual equipment cooling installations, specialized refrigerated warehouses and facilities, and dehumidification systems. Additionally, the Senior Master HVAC Technician installs new or repaired components and performs complex modifications of systems and components in accordance with applicable electrical publications and directives and will maintain and repair specialized equipment such as DOAS, MAU, and Pool Pak systems. The technician may perform complex repairs of components such as compressors, condensers, heat pumps, fluid and refrigerant gas lines, valves, meters, gauges, thermostats, pumps, mechanical linkages, electrical components, switching and controlling devices including pneumatic controls, variable speed drives, digital controlled devices, hydronic heating, cooling, and economizer systems. *This position will supervise lower level technicians, general maintenance workers, and maintenance trade helpers. Key Responsibilities Diagnose and repair various refrigerant systems including Variable Refrigerant Flow Systems, Chillers, Reversible Chillers, CRAC Units. Cut and bend tubing to correct length and shape using cutting and bending equipment and tools; thread pipe using machine or hand‑threading equipment; join tubing or pipes to various refrigerating units with sleeves, couplings, or unions; solder joints using torch; install various refrigerant valves in circuits. Test joints and connections in refrigerant piping for leaks using leak detector; verify leak‑free using vacuum pump and vacuum hold test. Test and verify proper operation of components; connect motors, compressors, temperature controls, humidity controls, and ventilation fans. Replace defective breaker controls, thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring to repair installed units. Add or remove Freon to refrigerant systems to achieve proper subcooling and superheat. Observe pressure and vacuum gauges and adjust controls to ensure proper operation. Wrap pipes in insulation batting and secure them in place with cement or wire bands. Install, repair, and service air conditioners ranging up to 1100 tons cooling capacity in warehouses, barracks, and commercial buildings. Prepare work orders and cost material estimates. Assist in training lower-level workers in mechanical repair techniques. Supervise and lead lower-level workers. Perform other related duties as assigned. Essential Skills Knowledge and proficiency of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of commercial and industrial grade HVAC equipment. Ability to perform single, technical tasks with a need to occasionally upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill‑based competencies include operating installation/repair equipment, planning and managing projects, preparing and maintaining accurate records, and handling hazardous materials. Specific knowledge‑based competencies include indoor air monitoring equipment and interpreting data; standards for design and construction; air conditioning and heating codes; hazards and safety precautions; and refrigerant handling and disposal. Knowledge of safety issues in the use of tools, equipment, and supplies used in repair of HVAC equipment. Be adaptable and flexible in work situations. Practice workplace safety in the use of tools, equipment, and supplies used in repair of HVAC equipment. Include proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent technical training and experience. 15+ years of advanced experience in advanced maintenance, repair, installation, and operation of commercial/industrial heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems. Experience must include inspection, disassembly, assembly, replacement, and repair of heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and/or air conditioning systems including compressors, motors, burners, pumps, filters, ductwork, pipes, valves, refrigerants and recovery systems, and pressure vessels. Experience in installing, calibrating, troubleshooting, and replacement of control systems is required. EPA Universal Refrigeration License. Valid driver’s license compliant with REAL ID Act or willingness to obtain one. Pass a pre‑employment drug screening and background check. Regular, dependable attendance. Available evenings and weekends for overtime. U.S. citizenship to obtain and maintain access to military installations. Physical Requirements Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs unassisted. Use of hands, reaching with hands and arms, talking, and walking. Prolonged periods of sitting, bending, squatting, standing, twisting, or stooping. Climbing ladders and entering confined spaces.
