Position Title Position Title Learning Specialist Position Number Position Number 896275 Position Category Position Category Administration School/Division School/Division The Office of Dean of Students Department Department Student Enrollment, Engagement, and Success - Student Access Services Full-Time or Part-Time Full-Time or Part-Time Full-Time Description Reporting to the Associate Director for Community Engagement and Initiatives of Student Access Services ( SAS ), the Learning Specialist’s role will be supporting students in two key programs: the Program for Academic Learning Skills ( PALS ) and the Academic Coaching Program ( ACP ). These programs support students with specific learning disabilities, ADHD , and other academic challenges. The Learning Specialist provides individualized coaching and support to enhance student’s academic skills and overall collegiate experience. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Conduct individualized, weekly one-on-one skill development sessions for students enrolled in the PALS and ACP programs Collaborate closely with students to develop and implement personalized action plans focused on academic and study skill development Participate in the interactive intake process for students requesting reasonable ADA accommodations Serve as a liaison between PALS students, faculty, administrators, and parents to ensure cohesive support and advocacy Conduct needs assessments and consultations for students registered with SAS , making appropriate referrals to campus resources as needed including connecting students with Peer Alliance Mentorship Program Actively participate in recruitment initiatives for general Hofstra University admissions and the PALS program. This includes representing the program during speaking engagements, open houses, webinars, and other outreach events to attract prospective students Accurately record data and appointment notes in Accommodate, Navigate, and other relevant systems to document student progress and interactions Facilitate and lead Special Topics Groups within the Student Access Services ( SAS ) department, providing targeted support and discussion on various academic and life skills topics Implement and adhere to the PALS curriculum, ensuring personalized and effective sessions that focus on academics, time management, executive functioning strategies, stress management, writing proficiency skills, instilling autonomy, and social adjustment Review disability documentation for the PALS determination process Interview prospective candidates for the PALS program, assessing their needs and eligibility Collaborate with other offices within SEES to design and implement programming that supports the diverse needs of students with disabilities Assist in coordination and supervision of graduate support staff in support of the SAS Testing Center Operations to implement accommodated faculty exams Support the Associate Director of Student Support in the implementation of accommodation services and assistive technologies Perform other duties as required to support the daily operations of the SAS department, contributing to a collaborative and efficient work environment Master’s degree in psychology, counseling, special education, rehabilitation, social work, disability services, or a related field required Minimum one year of experience working with students with learning disabilities at the post-secondary level, preferably in a teaching capacity Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and other federal laws pertaining to disability in higher education Experience interpreting disability-related documentation and psychoeducational evaluations Proven ability to teach reading and writing skills and experience in developing alternative learning strategies Experience working with students with physical and psychological disabilities, as well as those on the autism spectrum, preferred Commitment to fostering diversity and inclusivity, with demonstrated competence in working with students from diverse background Strong organizational skills with attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively in a team-oriented environment Strong computer technical abilities, including proficiency with Microsoft and Google products, assistive technologies, data management systems, and software used for student support services Availability to work occasional evening and weekend hours as needed Two years of experience working with students with learning disabilities at the post-secondary level. Knowledge of assistive technology and its application in educational settings. Previous experience in a higher education setting providing academic support services. Familiarity with Navigate, Accommodate, or similar student management systems. Additional Information Hofstra University provides the above salary* as a good faith estimate of the starting pay range which considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience and education.
