Sr. Patient Access Specialist

Senior Patient Access Specialist (On‑site) This position is located at Children’s Minnesota – St. Paul Hospital and requires the employee to work on site. The hourly rate for this role is $19.55–$20.90 per hour, based on experience. Responsibilities Perform admitting duties for all patients receiving services at Ensemble Health Partners. Assign accurate MRNs, complete medical necessity and compliance checks, and provide patient instructions. Collect insurance information, receive and process physician orders, and utilize an overlay tool. Operate the telephone switchboard to relay incoming, outgoing, and inter‑office calls. Utilize quality auditing and reporting systems to ensure accounts are corrected. Develop training materials and programs for new hires and provide continuing education to associates. Develop staff schedules within the patient access department. Provide after‑hours support; perform on‑call duties as needed, including unscheduled coverage for staffing issues. Collect point‑of‑service payments in emergency, outpatient, and inpatient settings, manage past‑due balances, and offer payment plan options. Conduct audits of accounts, ensure all forms are completed accurately and on time to meet audit standards, and provide statistical data to leadership. Explain consent for treatment forms to patients or guarantors, obtain necessary signatures, and document appropriately. Distribute patient education documents such as Medicare notices, observation forms, consent forms, and other required materials. Review eligibility responses in the insurance verification system, select the applicable insurance plan code, and enter benefit data to support point‑of‑service collections and billing processes. Screen medical necessity using Advanced Beneficiary Notice (ABN) software to inform Medicare patients of possible non‑payment, and distribute the ABN as appropriate. Document other designated forms and pamphlets as required. Qualifications 1 to 3 years of experience in a similar patient access or revenue‑cycle position. Associate degree or equivalent experience. Understanding of the revenue cycle, including admission, billing, payments, and denials. Comprehensive knowledge of patient insurance processes for obtaining authorizations and benefits verification. Knowledge of health insurance requirements, medical terminology, CPT, and procedure codes. Demonstrated inquisitiveness and openness to innovation, including the use of AI to improve processes.
