The City of Sumner is recruiting a dependable and detail-oriented Custodial Technician to join the Facilities team. This position is a full-time, Fair Labor Standards Act non-exempt position. This is designated as a Safety Sensitive position. The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Alternative work schedules, including evenings and weekends, may be required based on operational needs. Remote work is not available for this position. Attendance at evening meetings or other off-duty events is not typically required but may occur occasionally based on operational needs. Under the direction of the Facilities Field Supervisor, the Custodial Technician performs a variety of custodial and light maintenance duties to ensure City buildings and facilities are clean, safe, sanitary and well maintained. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to mopping, sweeping, vacuuming, washing windows, collecting trash, and cleaning building surfaces and restrooms. While actual duties of the Custodian will vary from time to time, Custodians may be assigned to perform work in any or all facilities.

Custodial work is performed independently in accordance with established procedures and standards. Assignments and priorities are typically communicated by the supervisor verbally, with written instructions provided as needed. Employees are expected to exercise sound judgment in completing assigned work while referring unusual situations to the supervisor.

Examples of typical duties:

• Collect trash, recyclable waste products, and other foreign items and dispose in appropriate receptacles.
• Clean, polish and sanitize building surfaces including walls, counter tops, door plates, drinking fountains, handrails, stairs, floors, etc.
• Vacuum and shampoo carpets and rugs in offices and open spaces, edge vacuum and vacuum upholstery; may also vacuum ceiling vents and return air vents.
• Clean, sanitize and maintain restrooms by cleaning mirrors, fixtures, floors and shower areas by cleaning and sanitizing shower floors and walls and locker areas.
• Restock and maintain adequate supplies such as paper towels, sanitary supplies, soaps etc.
• Clean and refill dispensers.
• Sweep, mop, buff and refinish floors, rubber mats, stairways and stairs.
• Dust, clean and polish furniture, woodwork, metal work, fixtures, lights, ledges etc.
• Clean and wash windows, doors and blinds as required.
• Ensure security of assigned building and offices by checking that doors are locked.
• Ensure all ashtrays are cleaned outside City buildings and assigned smoking areas.
• Ensure building entrances are clean and clear of leaves, grass and other materials.
• Dust and clean coffee and vending machines.
• Clean, stock and maintain custodian closets.
• Service and maintain automatic restroom fixtures and dispensers, including changing batteries and performing basic maintenance as needed.
• Operate custodial equipment such as floor scrubbers, buffers, carpet extractors, pressure washers, and vacuums.
• Safely handle, mix, store, and dispose of cleaning chemicals in accordance with OSHA regulations, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and City policies.
• Report maintenance, safety, or security issues observed during daily work.
• Maintain accurate records of cleaning activities, supply usage, or equipment maintenance as required.
• Utilize computer software, including the City's asset management system to document completed custodial work, update maintenance records, and track work performed on City-owned facilities.
• Perform general and minor repair of custodial equipment.
• Become familiar with, follow and actively support the City's mission, vision, values and behavior statements.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Any combination of experience and education which provides the applicant with the listed necessary knowledge, skills and abilities will be considered. High school diploma, general education degree (GED), or equivalent required. At least six (6) months of related experience preferred.

Necessary Special Requirements Possession of valid Washington State Driver's License and the ability to maintain a driving record that meets the City's driving standards.

Knowledge of: Principles, practices, methods, equipment, and materials used in custodial work. Safe work practices and applicable federal, state, and local health and safety regulations. Proper handling, storage, and use of cleaning chemicals and custodial supplies, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS).

Skilled in: Operating a variety of equipment used to clean and sanitize surfaces safely and effectively.

Ability to: Follow established policies, procedures, and work standards. Perform physically demanding work and meet the physical requirements of the position. Operate a variety of custodial equipment, tools, and machinery. Safely handle, mix, store, and use cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, and custodial supplies in accordance with manufacturer recommendations, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and applicable safety regulations. Understand, interpret, and follow oral and written instructions, policies, procedures, and established work standards. Use interpersonal skills effectively in a tactful, patient and courteous manner. Read, understand, and apply work orders, instructions, labels, safety information, and other routine written materials. Effectively present information in one-on-one situations to supervisor and/or other employees of the organization. Add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimal. Communicate effectively, orally and in writing with tact, patience and courtesy. Provide excellent customer service by using a friendly, professional and accurate and customer orientated approach to a wide variety of customers, including: business owners, government officials, general public and other staff. This would include in-person, written and oral communications. Maintain reliable attendance. Contribute to the City's mission, vision and values.

Description of Work Environment: Work is performed primarily indoors in City-owned buildings and facilities. The employee is occasionally required to work outdoors and may be exposed to varying weather conditions. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to cleaning chemicals, dust, fumes, airborne particles, wet or slippery surfaces, and moving mechanical equipment. The employee may occasionally be exposed to electrical hazards, vibration, temperature extremes, and other conditions associated with facility maintenance and custodial work. The position requires the use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to established safety policies and procedures. Noise levels range from moderate to loud depending on the equipment and work being performed.

Positions in this class typically require stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, mobility, fingering, grasping, talking, seeing, hearing, walking, climbing, and crawling. Medium work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
