Phlebotomist, Inpatient

SHIFT Evening 1:30 PM - 10:00 PM and Nights 10:00 PM - 6:30 AM available. JOB SUMMARY Responsible for drawing blood samples from patient safely and accurately for testing and research. Submits samples of blood, urine or tissue with proper label for analysis to the laboratory. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Job Duties Obtain blood specimens by venipuncture and/or capillary puncture with minimum trauma using the Phlebotomy collection device. Instruct patients on proper collection of urine samples. Research specimen requirements prior to collection for esoteric or new tests. Maintain fast and accurate specimen collection turnaround time. Use Epic Beaker to enter lab orders and verify tests ordered on the requisition with respect to details for accurate test codes while processing specimens through the LIS system. Maintain positive patient identification and specimen requirements. Ensure specimen integrity during transportation and storage per protocol. Provide exceptional customer service to patients of all ages and backgrounds. Greet patients kindly, address concerns, and communicate with professionalism and compassion. Answer calls and follow up on questions. Process laboratory samples according to procedure. Centrifuge and prepare aliquots when needed. Dispatch specimens to the main laboratory or designated testing facility with fewer than two mislabeled specimens. Document all accurate information regarding specimens. Adhere to Patient Safety Goals, perform inventory of supplies, provide training to other phlebotomists, and lead in absence of the Lead Phlebotomist. Ensure all tests are accounted for in the ordering system. Contact physician's office or nurse to clarify orders before collecting specimens. Track specimens to ensure integrity and minimize errors. Order and monitor supplies, ensuring expiration dates are clear, discard expired supplies, and keep phlebotomy carts fully stocked and organized. Utilize Risk Management and Process Improvement tools in an accurate and timely manner to identify quality improvement issues. Participate in review of monthly schedule and work assignments. Be accountable for daily workflow and act as liaison/problem solver for phlebotomy issues. Perform blood collections, cultures, and special collections such as Lactic acid, Ammonia, QFTs with minimum errors. Maintain attendance reports for assigned days and times. Follow procedures regarding leave requests consistently. Perform other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Licenses and Certifications: (BLS) BASIC LIFE SUPPORT course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC). Preferred Education: Completion of a Phlebotomy program in an accredited college or university. Experience: Previous phlebotomy experience. Preferred Licenses: (ACLS) Advanced Cardiac Life Support course accredited by AHA or ARC. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Able to lift up to 10 pounds. Requires constant walking. Wears RFID tag to check out collection device throughout shift. Exercise considerable judgment in application, evaluation, and implementation of new or revised procedures, techniques, and practices. Internal contact with patients, nurses, physicians, and allied health practitioners regarding specimen collection. PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORKING CONDITIONS Physical Demands: Lifting, Walking. Working Conditions: Hazards, Laboratory setting, May be exposed to body fluids and infectious diseases. Salary Salary negotiable. Security This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code 51.215.
