About the Role

We are looking for a highly hands-on Controller to build and scale the accounting function within a fast-growing technology company.

This is an opportunity for someone who enjoys operating at the intersection of technical accounting, systems, automation, and business operations. The Controller will own the integrity of the company’s accounting operations, establish scalable processes and controls, prepare the organization for its first external audit, and help build an increasingly automated finance function.

You’ll report directly to the Head of Finance, serving as a strategic partner who can own the technical accounting details while building the systems and processes needed to support the company as it scales. The team values clear communication, systems-level thinking, and a hands-on approach to problem-solving.

The ideal candidate has progressive accounting and finance experience, has built or significantly scaled an accounting function within a high-growth organization, and is comfortable operating as an individual contributor while creating the infrastructure required for future growth.

A strong systems mindset and genuine curiosity around applying AI and automation to accounting workflows are particularly important.

What You'll Do

• Own the monthly close and financial reporting process, including reconciliations, accruals, revenue recognition, capitalization, equity accounting, and other technical accounting areas.
• Build the company’s audit-readiness framework from the ground up, including documentation, controls, accounting policies, supporting schedules, and preparation for the first external audit.
• Design and implement scalable financial processes and systems across accounts payable, procurement, expense management, purchasing approvals, vendor commitments, and spend reporting.
• Transition existing accounting processes from manual or founder-led workflows into a scalable, well-controlled finance function.
• Identify opportunities to use AI and automation across accounting workflows while ensuring appropriate controls, human review, explainability, and auditability.
• Serve as a key finance stakeholder with Product and Engineering, bringing an accounting practitioner’s perspective to internal systems and product development.
• Partner with outsourced accounting resources to manage day-to-day accounting activities while improving and automating underlying processes.
• Drive improvements in the close process, with the long-term goal of creating a highly automated, near-real-time or zero-day close environment.
• Build clear visibility into spend by vendor, team, category, product, customer, and cost driver.
• Support financial planning and decision-making through financial modeling, forecasting, and investment analysis.
• Provide leadership with timely and accurate financial information while developing the accounting infrastructure required to support continued growth.

What We're Looking For

• 6+ years of progressive accounting and finance experience.
• Active CPA license required.
• Experience owning accounting operations in-house at a high-growth, scaling company.
• Proven experience building or significantly scaling an accounting function from the ground up.
• Experience transitioning an organization from founder-led, outsourced, or manual accounting processes into a scalable and controlled finance function.
• Strong technical accounting experience across financial reporting, revenue recognition, accruals, capitalization, and equity.
• Experience building processes across AP, procurement, expense management, purchasing approvals, vendor commitments, and spend reporting.
• Experience preparing an organization for an external audit and establishing appropriate financial controls.
• Experience with workflow and process automation.
• Experience with financial modeling, forecasting, and investment analysis.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to partner effectively with finance, leadership, Product, Engineering, and external accounting resources.
• A hands-on, builder mentality with strong systems-level thinking.

Preferred Background

• Previous public accounting or audit experience.
• Experience within a high-growth technology or startup environment.
• Genuine interest in applying AI to accounting and finance workflows.
• Track record of creating scalable systems rather than simply maintaining existing processes.

Compensation & Location

• Base Salary: $200,000–$250,000
• Location: New York, NY
• Work Policy: On-site five days per week at the Basis Flatiron office
• Employment Type: Full-time
