Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides essential nursing care to both non-acute and acutely ill residents while ensuring a safe and clean environment. This role requires the ability to react calmly and make sound judgments within the scope of nursing duties during patient care and emergencies.

Accountabilities

• Obtain nursing data through patient interviews and observations, under the direction of a Licensed Nurse (LN).
• Document observation findings and provide general nursing care to adults and geriatric patients, including activities such as bed baths, oral hygiene, dressing changes, and monitoring vital signs.
• Collect and transport specimens, reporting abnormal findings to the LN and recording observations as required.
• Provide bedside care, including positioning, lifting, and turning residents, assisting with meals, and maintaining cleanliness in patient rooms.
• Assist LNs in preparing residents for transport, including documentation and providing direct care.
• Offer 1:1 care for residents when necessary to ensure safety.
• Maintain a safe and clean environment by preparing nursing areas, reporting equipment issues, and handling linens and supplies appropriately.
• Engage in supply duties, ensuring adequate stock levels are maintained within assigned units.
• Dispose of solid and infectious waste per organizational policies and procedures.

Unit Specialty

• Obtain 12-lead Electrocardiograms (ECGs) as needed.
• Train and perform telemetry monitoring of patients within the inpatient unit.
• Become a Point of Care Trainer within three months of obtaining CNA II certification.
• Cross-train in additional hospital areas (e.g., Emergency Department, Labor & Delivery, Surgical Department) for staffing flexibility.
• Participate in Performance/Process Improvement projects within the unit.
• Serve as a preceptor for new CNA staff and CNA students.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Prior experience as a CNA preferred, but less than one year is acceptable.

Certificates and Licenses

• Current full, unrestricted CNA license in the state of Alaska.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Must complete additional courses as required for unit needs.

Shift Information

This position involves working night shifts of 12 hours with holiday coverage required.
