Registered Nurse (RN)

The Registered Nurse (RN) protects, promotes, and optimizes health and abilities. This includes the prevention of illness and injury, as well as the alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response and through advocacy in the care of individuals and families. The RN is responsible and accountable for compliance with all standards of practice and professional development. This is in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act, policies, Scope and Standards of Practice, Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the Bill of Patient Rights. The RN promotes a caring and healing environment for patient-centered care. The RN assesses, plans, delegates, coordinates, implements, and evaluates nursing care in managing a group of patients. The RN serves as a primary nurse and/or accountable nurse when designated by unit assignment. Factors related to safety, effectiveness, competency, cost, and impact are taken into consideration. The RN educates patients and families in health promotion and disease management using available resources. A working knowledge of pharmacology is utilized, and medications are safely administered according to policy. The RN shares in responsibility for productivity and effective resource utilization, including staffing, time management, supplies, and services. Compliance with all nursing practice standards, regulatory requirements, and policies is mandatory. The RN actively participates in and supports the Nursing Shared Governance Model and contributes to improvement initiatives. Engagement in professional development and completion of all mandatory education requirements is essential. Integration of nursing research and current evidence into practice is required. The RN provides a supportive learning environment for new employees and students. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
