Job Summary Advance Energy Geoscience Research to Support Kentucky’s Subsurface Resource Future The University of Kentucky is seeking a Geologist III to join the Kentucky Geological Survey (KGS). This position will contribute to KGS’s subsurface and energy geology research program through the investigation of energy resources, basin analysis, geophysics, and related geoscience disciplines. The successful candidate will develop research projects, publish findings, engage with stakeholders, manage projects and personnel, and help advance KGS’s mission of supporting informed decisions about Kentucky’s subsurface resources. What You’ll Do Perform independent geologic research focused on subsurface energy resources, basin analysis, geophysics, petrophysics, stratigraphy, structural geology, and related topics. Compile, analyze, and interpret geological, geophysical, and petrophysical datasets to create maps, cross sections, and regional subsurface characterizations. Conduct field investigations, collect geological samples, and apply established data collection and safety standards. Publish research results in peer-reviewed outlets and present findings at professional conferences and meetings. Manage research projects, including project planning, budgeting, reporting, database maintenance, and coordination with collaborators and sponsors. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including scientific publication and presentation experience. Ability to manage multiple projects, maintain organized datasets, and oversee project deliverables. Strong attention to detail, sound professional judgment, and analytical problem-solving skills. Collaborative approach to teamwork, mentoring, stakeholder engagement, and relationship building. Knowledge of Kentucky geology is beneficial. PhD 3 years of related experience What’s In It for You Opportunity to build and lead a research program focused on emerging and traditional energy resources important to the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Access to extensive KGS resources, including drill cores, well logs, seismic reflection data, and potential fields datasets. Opportunities to collaborate with researchers, government agencies, industry partners, and stakeholders across the region. Potential opportunities for adjunct faculty appointments and involvement in mentoring and education. Kentucky continues to experience strong interest in both established and emerging energy resources, creating opportunities for research that informs responsible resource development and long-term resilience for the Commonwealth. KGS is investing in expanded understanding of subsurface systems, energy resources, and geologic storage opportunities that support statewide needs.
