Position Summary
The Director of Finance is a senior, hands-on leader responsible for the overall financial management, financial systems, and integrity of JBI Library. This role maintains and oversees the general ledger, leads the monthly close, prepares financial reports for leadership and the Board, oversees compliance and internal controls, and drives the annual budget process in accordance with nonprofit GAAP, ensuring the organization has the financial clarity and discipline needed to advance its mission.

This is an exciting moment for JBI Library. Following a recent modernization of financial systems-including implementation of QuickBooks, program-based budgeting, and updated payroll systems-the organization is ready to build on this foundation and more fully integrate these tools into its daily work and long-term planning. The Director of Finance will play a key role in refining and strengthening these systems, ensuring they support clear processes, strong financial stewardship, and thoughtful decision-making across the organization. In doing so, this role will help translate financial data into meaningful insight that supports JBI Library's mission, sustainability, and continued growth and impact in furtherance of JBI Library's strategic goals.

The Director of Finance is an important member of the senior leadership team and works closely with the Executive Director, staff, and Board to help steward JBI Library's financial health. This role combines hands-on daily financial operations with thoughtful planning and analysis, helping ensure that the organization's resources, systems, and financial practices support both current needs and long-term sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership

• Partner with the Executive Director to execute the strategy established by the Executive Director and Board
• Lead the annual budgeting process forecasting and cash flow planning, supporting budget owners in budget development and financial analysis
• Develop and maintain short- and long-term financial forecasts and models
• Translate financial data into clear insights, highlighting risks, opportunities, and key decision points
• Partner with leadership to align financial planning with organizational priorities and goals

Accounting & Financial Operations

• Maintain and oversee general ledger accuracy and lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
• Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting in accordance with nonprofit GAAP
• Maintain strong internal controls and appropriate segregation of duties
• Oversee financial processes related to a high-volume of small and large donations from myriad sources, ensuring accurate recording, reconciliation, and coordination with development systems
• Review and submit semi-monthly payroll

Financial Reporting & Compliance

• Prepare and analyze monthly financial reports for leadership and the Board, including budget-to-actuals and updated forecasts
• Provide clear, actionable analysis of variances, trends, risks, and opportunities
• Lead annual audit, Form 990, and required state filing processes
• Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and donor restrictions

Grants, Revenue & Restricted Funds

• Partner closely with the Development Director to align fundraising strategy with financial planning
• Support contributed revenue forecasting and tracking against goals
• Provide financial analysis to inform campaign planning, donor strategy, and grant budgeting
• Track restricted grants, including allocating expenses and releasing restricted funds
• Create all financial materials including budget and reports for grants

Asset & Cash Management

• Manage cash flow and liquidity forecasting
• Oversee investments and operating reserves in partnership with external advisors and the Investment Committee of the Board
• Monitor financial position and ensure appropriate use of resources

Systems, Policies & Process Improvement

• Manage and continuously improve financial systems, including QuickBooks and Bill.com
• Ensure systems support accurate, efficient, secure, and scalable financial operations
• Identify and implement process improvements, particularly related to high-volume transactions and reporting
• Maintain and update financial policies and procedures

Team Leadership & Collaboration

• Supervise and support the Senior Accountant, providing guidance, mentorship, and oversight
• Ensure clear roles and responsibilities across the finance function
• Collaborate across departments to support strong financial decision-making
• Provide training and support to program leaders to strengthen budget management and financial literacy

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required; CPA or MBA preferred
• 7-12+ years of progressive finance and accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit environment
• Strong knowledge of nonprofit GAAP, audits, Form 990, and grant accounting
• Demonstrated experience managing audits and working with external auditors
• Strong proficiency with modern financial management platforms similar to Quickbooks, Bill.com, Expensify, payroll systems, and integrated reporting tools
• Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis
• Proven ability to build, improve, and manage financial systems and processes
• Experience supervising staff and leading a finance function
• Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills, including the ability to translate complex financial information into clear, actionable insights for non-financial stakeholders, senior leadership, and board members

Compensation

Salary range: $155,000 - $170,000, commensurate with experience. The position also offers an attractive benefits package. Benefits include:

Occasional local travel required. This position is open until filled. This is an exempt position and is not eligible for overtime.
