Position Overview

The Hospital Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a hands-on executive responsible for the hospital's financial performance, fiscal integrity, Revenue Cycle Management (RCM), and financial turnaround initiatives. The CFO provides direct leadership across Finance, Accounting, Revenue Cycle, budgeting, forecasting, financial reporting, audits, and capital planning. The CFO will work directly with financial and operational data, identify performance gaps, implement solutions, and hold teams accountable for measurable results.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership
  • Maintain direct accountability for financial performance, cash flow, operating margin, budgeting, forecasting, and financial stability.
  • Lead financial turnaround and performance-improvement initiatives with measurable goals and accountability.
  • Analyze financial and operational results, identify performance gaps, and implement corrective actions.
  • Develop operating and capital budgets, forecasts, cash projections, and financial improvement plans.
  • Identify opportunities for cost containment, productivity improvement, and financial optimization.
  • Present financial results, risks, and recommendations to hospital and Enterprise leadership and the Board.
Revenue Cycle Management
  • Provide direct leadership and management of the hospital's Revenue Cycle Department and overall RCM performance.
  • Maintain accountability for cash collections, A/R, denials, clean claims, DNFB, reimbursement, payer performance, and revenue integrity.
  • Lead Revenue Cycle operating reviews and drive corrective actions when performance falls below expectations.
  • Lead the development and ongoing management of Revenue Operations dashboards and KPIs.
  • Work directly with Revenue Cycle and operational teams to resolve collection barriers, payer issues, workflow deficiencies, and reimbursement challenges.
  • Evaluate RCM processes, staffing, technology, and vendors and implement improvements necessary to strengthen performance.
Accounting, Audits & Compliance
  • Oversee General Accounting, financial reporting, monthly close, reconciliations, and internal financial controls.
  • Lead annual financial audits and work directly with external auditors.
  • Identify and resolve accounting discrepancies, audit findings, reconciliation issues, and control deficiencies.
  • Ensure compliance with Medicare, Medicaid, federal, state, third-party payer, CMS, and applicable healthcare financial requirements.
  • Maintain appropriate financial and Revenue Cycle policies, procedures, controls, and audit readiness.
Leadership & Accountability
  • Provide direct leadership to Finance, Accounting, and Revenue Cycle teams.
  • Establish clear KPIs, performance expectations, deadlines, and accountability.
  • Maintain a visible, hands-on leadership presence and actively participate in resolving financial and operational challenges.
  • Develop team capabilities while holding leaders accountable for measurable results.
Qualifications
  • Hands-on executive leadership style with strong hospital financial and Revenue Cycle knowledge.
  • Strong financial, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to translate financial and operational data into measurable actions and results.
  • Strong sense of urgency, ownership, accountability, and follow-through.
  • Strong executive communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to succeed in a financially challenging, turnaround-focused hospital environment.
Experience
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive finance leadership experience, preferably within an acute-care hospital or health system.
  • Demonstrated hospital financial turnaround or significant performance-improvement experience required.
  • Revenue Cycle Management leadership or significant direct oversight experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience managing Revenue Cycle KPIs, cash collections, A/R, denials, reimbursement, and revenue integrity.
  • Experience developing financial and Revenue Cycle dashboards.
  • Experience leading financial audits and working directly with external auditors.
Requirements

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, or related field required.
  • Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA), Finance, Healthcare Administration, or related field preferred.
  • CPA, CHFP, FHFMA, or related professional certification preferred.

Physical Requirements
