Design Technician III Engineering

Purpose Assists in scheduling other technician work and monitors a staff of designers/technicians. This individual is responsible for originating and checking layout and design drawings for structural wood products and all items manufactured or supplied by the company. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Collaborate with outside sales personnel and customers to safely and accurately complete structures with high quality. Assign work to technicians and ensure that tasks are completed in a timely manner. Make recommendations on hires, promotions, terminations, and performance evaluations within the department to the Senior Team Leader. Maintain records of work performed by the team and communicate project progress to management. Develop layout and design drawings from architectural drawings or sketches provided to the company. Make phone calls to building designers or professionals to obtain or clarify information shown on blue‑line drawings. Review and check layout and design drawings prepared by less experienced truss/panel technicians and assist in making modifications prior to releasing drawings to the field or production. Obtain information pertaining to products supplied by the company that have been field modified or damaged; summarize and give to a professional engineer for repair drawings when required. Analyze technical data and reports to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications. Understand the building code and apply knowledge of special truss/panel industry issues; address issues appropriately. Analyze plans and diagrams, or observe and make notes on material processing, to determine material and processing specifications or specifications for construction activities. Write technical descriptions specifying material qualities and properties. Draw rough sketches or arrange for finished drawings or photographs to illustrate specified materials or assembly sequence. Prepare truss repair drawings for review and approval by a professional engineer. Implement BFS panel design standards and ensure that all designers and panel designs conform to these standards. Perform other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities This position acts as a team leader and directs the work of less‑experienced technicians. Minimum Requirements Associate's degree (A.A.) or equivalent from a two‑year college or technical school; or six months to one‑year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with PrimeCad, MS Word, MS Excel, and AutoCAD is required. Competencies Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Work Environment / Physical Activity Employee frequently required to stand and sit, and occasionally walk; may lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Work in typical office environment and outside locations with temperature and weather variations. Employee regularly required to use close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less) and color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors). Employee subject to quiet conditions, such as those in a library or private office.
