Job Description

This position involves performing specialized tasks on heavy highway construction projects. The ideal candidate possesses expertise in specific construction skills, a strong understanding of safety protocols, and the ability to work effectively within a team environment.

Essential Functions

• Perform skilled labor tasks such as concrete finishing, pipe laying, or asphalt paving.
• Operate specific construction equipment as required for the assigned task.
• Follow project blueprints, specifications, and instructions from supervisors.
• Ensure quality control by inspecting work for compliance with standards.
• Maintain and repair tools and equipment.
• Implement traffic control measures and maintain a safe work zone.
• Assist with surveying and layout tasks.
• Provide guidance and training to less experienced workers.
• Document daily activities and report progress.

Critical Competencies

• Communication-Communicates clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, while actively listening and adapting the message to the audience.
• Equipment Operation-Proficiency in operating large loaders with ability to accurately and smoothly maneuver and complete various tasks, such as loading, dumping, and transporting materials. Skill in handling attachments and understanding their applications.
• Teamwork-Ability to effectively work as a part of a team, coordinating with other operators, dispatch/scale house and ground personnel.
• Problem Solving-Identify, analyze, and resolve work-related issues efficiently and effectively using practical knowledge, experience, and hands-on skills. Finds practical solutions, implements fixes, and adapts to unexpected challenges.

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Experience

• Proven experience as a skilled laborer in heavy highway construction.
• Specialized skills in at least one area, such as grading, sign installation, concrete, asphalt, or pipe laying.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Specialized Labor-Expertise in a specific construction skill (concrete, asphalt, pipe laying, grading, sign installation.)
• Ability to interpret and follow construction blueprints and technical drawings.
• Skill in operating task-specific construction equipment.
• Ability to inspect and ensure work meets quality standards.
• Ability to identify and resolve issues that arise during construction tasks.
• Clear and effective communication with supervisors and team members.
• Ability to collaborate and work efficiently within a team.

• Effective communication and teamwork skills.
• Must be willing to work overtime and travel to different operations depending on company demands.
• Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions and tolerate being exposed to loud noises.
• Physical ability to sit, stand, push and pull for extended periods.

Salary. The salary is prescribed by the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Candidates will be placed according to union contract salary scale at $41.43 per hour. Full benefits package including health insurance, a pension plan, paid vacation. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
