Job Description

LOCATIONS: Hybrid - Troy or Detroit as primary

The Oncology Pharmacy Specialist serves as the institutional expert and clinical authority in oral anticancer therapy management, bearing primary responsibility for directing all pharmacy-related activities within this critical specialty practice area. This position requires the development, implementation, and continuous refinement of evidence-based systems and protocols that directly impact patient safety and therapeutic outcomes. The Oncology Pharmacist operates with substantial autonomy, exercising independent clinical judgment and engaging with interdisciplinary teams to address complex clinical challenges and drive practice improvements.

Key responsibilities include:

• Maintain direct oversight and leadership of all oral anticancer therapy management initiatives; develop, implement, and evaluate evidence-based clinical protocols and systems that ensure optimal patient outcomes and medication safety
• Serve as the primary clinical consultant for complex oncology pharmacy cases; collaborate with oncology physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary teams to optimize therapeutic regimens and participate in oncology committees and clinical rounds
• Provide comprehensive patient counseling on oral anticancer medication administration, side effects, drug interactions, and adherence strategies; conduct medication therapy management reviews including drug interaction screening, toxicity monitoring, and dose optimization
• Establish and maintain rigorous practice standards; conduct clinical education and training programs for pharmacy staff, residents, and students; mentor team members in clinical excellence and evidence-based practice
• Maintain current knowledge of oncology pharmacotherapy, emerging treatments, and evidence-based practice guidelines; exercise independent clinical decision-making and assume full accountability for patient care outcomes
• Develop and implement quality assurance initiatives and performance metrics to evaluate program effectiveness and identify opportunities for continuous improvement
• Ensure strict regulatory compliance and maintain comprehensive documentation of all pharmacy activities, clinical interventions, and patient outcomes in accordance with institutional and state requirements

Qualifications

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

• Must hold a degree from an accredited college of pharmacy and must complete a residency training program or have equivalent experience in hospital pharmacy practice.
• Minimum of 3-5 years of pharmacist experience or the equivalent training and experience at another institution, preferred.
• Must have demonstrated the ability to meet and exceed practice standards set for a Level II pharmacist. (Henry Ford Detroit Hospital Only).
• Must be able to serve as an institutional authority in a given specialty practice area.
• Must have demonstrable leadership abilities and exhibit teamwork when working with others.
• Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills which enable him/her to contribute effectively in the dissemination of information to all levels of health care personnel in the institution.
• Should have a proven research/publication record.
• Must be qualified to work with pharmacy students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Must have a previous work history of reliability, dependability, and willingness to assume additional responsibilities.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES REQUIRED:

• Must be licensed or eligible for licensure in the State of Michigan.
• If eligible, licensure must be obtained within 30 days of hire; failure to obtain licensure will result in termination of the Pharmacy Specialist position.
