Investigator 3 Position in Anchorage

Come join the State of Alaska! This job class uses Competency Based minimum qualifications (MQs). Please read the Competency Based MQ instructions below to learn more.

The Department of Law, Criminal Division is recruiting for an Investigator 3 in Anchorage! This position is open to Alaska Residents only. Please check our residency definition to determine if you qualify.

What You Will Be Doing: The MFCU investigator conducts high level, complex investigations of medical professional service providers who are suspected or known to have committed Medicaid fraud, patient abuse and/or misappropriation of recipient assets. The investigator is expected to develop and manage all investigative aspects of complex cases involving Medicaid fraud and any other white-collar crime that may be associated with the case. These complex cases can be difficult to prove and are generally document-intensive and often extremely voluminous in nature and typically involve multiple suspects, surveillance and consultation with subject matter experts. The investigator must be able to adapt to a wide variety of investigative scenarios, demonstrate good judgment, be a critical thinker, highly self-motivated, flexible and be both a team player and an independent worker with minimum supervision and direction.

Mission and Values/Culture: The Medicaid Fraud Control Unit (MFCU) is a federally mandated and funded investigative and prosecutorial unit consisting of attorneys, criminal investigators, a forensic accountant, and a paralegal. The mission of the unit is to investigate and prosecute fraud by healthcare providers, healthcare facilities, pharmaceutical manufacturers, pharmacies and other healthcare related providers that illegally divert Medicaid funds. The MFCU is also responsible for investigating and prosecuting abuse, neglect or financial exploitation of any patient in any licensed facility as well as abuse, neglect and financial exploitation of any Medicaid recipient.

Benefits of Joining Our Team: As an MFCU investigator, your work directly protects vulnerable Alaskans and ensures Medicaid resources go to providers who deliver safe, ethical care. You will handle complex cases involving healthcare fraud, patient abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation. The work will provide you opportunities to collaborate with attorneys, auditors, medical professionals, and federal partners such as HHS-OIG or DOJ.

You can expect a 37.5 hour work week; 12 paid holidays; personal leave accrual starting at 6 hours per pay period (about 21 days annually), increasing with years of service. The general office hours are 8:00AM to 4:30PM but there is flexibility in establishing your regular hours around core business hours.

The Working Environment You Can Expect: The office environment is friendly and collaborative, handling a wide variety of interesting and unique cases. You will likely explore new avenues of investigation and have the opportunity to participate in a type of criminal prosecution that may have never been seen before in Alaska. The Medicaid Fraud Control Unit is located at 310 K Street, Ste. 308 and has a collaborative team of 6 investigators, 3 attorneys, a forensic account, paralegal and law office assistant.

Who We Are Looking For: We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

  • Criminal Investigation: Knowledge of the guidelines, regulations, and procedures associated with criminal investigation, including evidence detection and handling and drawing appropriate factual inferences and conclusions.
  • Criminal Law: Knowledge of state and Federal criminal laws, including procedures, regulations, guidelines, and precedents related to admissibility of evidence and prosecution
  • Decision Making: Makes sound, well-informed, and objective decisions; perceives the impact and implications of decisions; commits to action, even in uncertain situations, to accomplish organizational goals; causes change.

If you can imagine yourself in this role, we encourage you to apply!
