Radiology Technologist

Computed Tomography Technologist

Performs diagnostic CT procedures within the CT Department utilizing specific equipment for that purpose. Rotates through diagnostic radiology as assigned. Involved in the practice of radiation and general safety at all times. Performs the duties and responsibilities within the scope of a Computed Tomography Technologist - Level I, as defined within the job description.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education, Certification, and/or Licensure: 1. Radiography certification with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or Nuclear Medicine Technologist with the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB). 2. Must possess current licensure as required by state board where services will be provided:
    • MD: Radiographer license through the Maryland Board of Physicians.
    • OH: Radiographer license through the Ohio Board of Radiology
    • PA: No state license is required
    • WV: Radiography License OR Nuclear Medicine and Diagnostic CT License through the West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board.
  • 3. Certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.
  • 4. State criminal background check and Federal (if applicable), as required for regulated areas.
  • Experience: 1. One (1) year of computed tomography experience.
  • Career Ladder Level Requirement: 1. Computed Tomography certified with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) OR actively working in multiple modalities.

Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepares room, equipment, materials, as needed for patient exams, including sterile technique. Cleans and disinfects rooms and equipment following each patient exam, using current infection control policies.
  • Performs examinations per Physician's orders and explains procedures to the patients. Documents any variations from protocol due to patient's condition or other unknown cause and relays patient history and clinical data to Radiologist.
  • Observes patient and equipment and reports any unusual occurrences or changes. Transports and assists patients as needed.
  • Documents status of patient in reference to radiology/CT procedure on patient's chart.
  • Documents variances repeats and other such occurrences to help maintain high quality health care and opportunity for quality improvement.
  • Maintains stock supplies, performs general office duties, responsible for proper film labeling and following prescribed techniques to assure acceptable quality and consistency.
  • Practices safe radiation exposure and protection as well as general safety for patient's, visitors, and staff at all times.
  • Participates in the patient safety training and patient protection, including the needs and methods to report medical/healthcare errors and abuse.
  • Produces diagnostic quality images utilizing CT equipment and effectively judges CT images for proper technique to best demonstrate anatomy and pathology.
  • If applicable, performs diagnostic studies using mobile radiographic equipment in emergency or patient rooms as ordered by physician. Performs diagnostic studies in surgical suite with C-Arm and other equipment.
  • Provides care specific to the needs of neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.
  • May perform IV insertion/blood draws.
  • Administer IV/Oral/Rectal contrast for CT imaging procedures per radiologist protocol/department manual and ordering physician/care provider order.
  • Utilize PACS to ensure exams are completed and available for the radiologist to read and for the referring physician/care provider review.

  • Frequent walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and feeling are necessary body movements utilized in performing duties throughout the work shift.
  • Must be able to lift, move, and position patients of all weights, with varying amounts of assistance in a fair manner on a regular and recurring basis; exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Hearing and visual acuity must be within normal range.

Skills and Abilities

1. Knowledge of growth and development, understanding of the patient's needs and scope of treatment. 2. Understands the dynamics for each patient incorporating biophysical, bio-psychosocial, environmental, self-care, educational, spiritual, cultural, ethical and discharge planning needs. 3. Knowledge of total care of patients, whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment, focusing on the control of pain and other symptoms.

Computed Tomography Clinical Ladder

The Computed Tomography Clinical Ladder is a system-wide clinical advancement program to enhance professional development, provide a reward system for quality clinical performance, promote quality imaging care, and improve job satisfaction for computed tomography technologists.

To apply for the next level, the computed tomography technologist must meet the requirements of their current level. They must also meet the required years of experience, degree, and certification to apply for the next level.

Level 1

  • No experience required.
  • All computed tomography technologists with less than 12 months of experience enter at Level one.

Level 2

  • Meets requirements for previous level.
  • One year of experience.
  • Complete competency of Skill Set Tech 1.

Level 3

  • Meets requirements for previous levels.
  • One continuing education pathway.
  • Three years of experience.
  • Compliant in 3 leadership/supervisory skills.
  • Complete competency of Skill Set Tech 1 and 2, plus 3 additional skill sets.

Level 4

  • Meets requirements for previous levels.
  • One continuing education pathway.
  • Five years of experience.
  • Compliant in 5 leadership/supervisory skills.
  • Complete competency of Skill Set Tech 1 and 2, plus 5 additional skill sets.
