Surgical Tech II - Labor and Delivery - Casual/PRN

Job Summary Location: Methodist Women’s Hospital Address: 707 N. 190th Plaza - Elkhorn, NE Work Schedule: This is a casual position. Casual employees work on an 'as needed' basis to meet the needs of the business. 12 hour shifts from 7:00am to 7:00pm and 7:00pm to 7:00am. Allied health professional working as a part of the team delivering surgical care by assisting physicians and maintaining a sterile field during surgical procedure through consistent application of aseptic techniques. Essential Job Functions Perform preoperative preparation. Review physician preference list before operative procedure and assemble supplies and equipment needed for procedure. Open sterile supplies using sterile technique. Transfer medications and solutions to the sterile field according to policy. Communicate clearly and collaborate with other members of the perioperative team to prepare operative procedure. Function as scrub person during operative procedure by preparing, monitoring, and maintaining a sterile field. Complete surgical scrub according to policy. Perform scrub duties in an accurate, concise and timely manner. Wear appropriate personal protective apparel (PPA) and follow standard and policy for attire in the operating room. Organize and maintain sterile instruments and supplies in an organized manner. Perform counts according to facility policy and procedure during procedure and hand‑off situations. Assist with draping sterile field according to standard. Watch progress of the operation and anticipate needs of team members. Disassemble instruments and equipment, transport to processing department. Assist with cleaning room and prepares for subsequent procedure. Apply base knowledge and principles during operative procedure (Intraoperative Surgical). Base knowledge of anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, microbiology and pharmacology for optimal surgical patient care. Principles of computer science, electricity and robotics as needed for surgical patient care. Principles of sterile technique during the surgical procedure. Follow policy and procedure for Intraoperative Surgical procedures. Participate in surgical time‑out, fire risk assessment, and case summary for each operative procedure. Identify labels and handle specimens including hand‑off situations and disposition of specimen. Demonstrate collegiality and leadership qualities. Demonstrate awareness of, and participation in performance improvement activities. Report potential performance improvement problems to coordinators, core nurse and service leader, assist in problem solving. Maintain compliance with department call requirements, adjust hours to meet patient services. Eligible to seat preceptor training and serve as a mentor. Collaborate with specialty coordinator and Staff Development Nurse on completion of orientation processes including orientation map, core competencies and assignments. Document ongoing process of orienting staff and assist in mentoring. Participate in orientation of team members to new equipment and supplies. Achieve or maintain certification in profession, Certified Surgical Technologist. Provide appropriate care specific to the age of the customer/patient, to ensure understanding and comfort level of treatment as outlined in the Population Specific Criteria. Demonstrate ability to identify opportunities for and give individualized customer service/patient care according to customer/patient needs. Precepting. Conduct needs assessments. Conduct one on one and group training. Be knowledgeable of equipment used in surgical procedures, their reference manuals, and resources for consultation. Perform clinical preceptor role for specialty service and follow core competency outline. Collaborate with appropriate Core Coordinator, and/or Resource Coordinator regarding assignments of students and orientees and document progress or concerns. Document on core competencies, records orientees/students’ progress, and suggest improvements and additional learning needs. Collaborate with L&D and HROB Core Coordinator on completion of core competencies for specialty service. Provide care and be able to provide intervention for all patient populations. Job Requirements Education Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technology program required. For MJE Surgery Main: Completion of a Military Surgical Technology program may be substituted for an accredited Surgical Technology program. Satisfactory completion of annual mandatory education requirement. Experience MH, WH, MFH & MPC: 2 or more years of current operating room experience or a Certified Surgical Tech that meets the level one criteria required. MJE Surgery Main: One or more years of current operating room experience or current Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) that meets Surgical Tech level I criteria required. License/Certifications Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) Certification preferred. Skills/Knowledge/Abilities Ability to perform mathematical computations. Skilled in promoting positive relations when interacting with patients or other customers. Requires working with multiple activities and dividing time and attention to a variety of demands and working irregular hours. Ability to work in a team environment and solve problems in a diplomatic fashion. Oral and written communication with staff, patients, visitors, physicians and other departments.
