Veterinary Technician (CS-PRP and BPRP Containment)
$35 per hourGoldbelt, Inc.
Overview Goldbelt Apex, a part of the Healthcare Technology Transformation Group, is a data-focused company dedicated to process and quality in every aspect. As experts in healthcare IT, Apex is committed to building systems for healthcare organizations to seamlessly communicate and exchange data across different systems and devices. Summary The Veterinary Technician provides veterinary technical support in Quarantine, Barrier, ABSL-2, ABSL-3 and ABSL-4 animal care and use areas. The Veterinary Technician shall independently select and apply appropriate procedures for the supported tasks and assist in providing non‑routine care, supporting changes in procedures, addressing problems, and more. Work requires continuous standing and walking on concrete or hard‑surfaced floors, climbing, working in a bent position, and carrying materials up to 50 pounds. The role demands greater strength, effort, and agility for handling, capturing, restraining, and providing veterinary technical services to the stronger, more active animals. Staff are exposed to unpleasant odors, noises, and unpredictable, ill‑natured animals, posing risks of injury, bites, scratches, burns from autoclaves and UV lights, and skin irritations from cleaning solutions. Protective clothing—including BSL‑4 positive‑pressure suits and respirators—is required for prolonged periods. Staff may work for extended periods in auditory and physical isolation within a completely isolated containment suite that carries infection risks from highly infectious agents that can cause fatal diseases in humans if personnel become infected. Containment involves adhering to procedures and requirements designed to manage and protect sensitive information and materials in this role. Responsibilities Essential Job Functions Provide veterinary technical support to animals at all biocontainment levels during experimental and non‑experimental periods in accordance with SOPs and protocols, including daily observations, surgical site preparation, administration of medications or substances by injection, oral, or topical routes, placement of intravenous catheters, intubation, anesthetizing animals, anesthetic monitoring and euthanasia, preparation of surgical sites, assistance in radiographic and surgical procedures, collection, storage, and proper submission of blood and biosamples, creation of GLP‑compliant medical record entries, health checks, physical exams, handling and restraining animals, transferring animals between cages or devices, providing environmental enrichment, documenting abnormal conditions or treatment failures, pairing NHPs, and ensuring food and water availability per SOPs. Assist in reviewing SOPs for all functions performed by Contract Employees. Assist the Contract Project Manager with reviewing pending animal studies, advising on laboratory personnel, facility, capability, equipment, and supply resources, and ensuring resources are available when required. Ensure all animals are properly identified and associated with specific experiments per SOPs. Transport animals within the facility or to/from other facilities in accordance with SOPs. Ensure proper room designations and entry procedures and update room entry orders as required. Maintain veterinary medical procedure areas in compliance with SOPs. Operate veterinary medical equipment and document operations at all biocontainment levels, including imaging, anesthesia administration and monitoring, and clinical pathology diagnostic equipment. Conduct and document time/temperature and bacteriological monitoring of autoclaves, addressing deviations and notifying the Contract Project Manager immediately. Perform routine operator/user‑level maintenance and repairs of all veterinary medical equipment and notify the Contract Project Manager when extensive repairs are needed. Monitor equipment certification and maintenance dates, notifying the Contract Project Manager of upcoming certifications. Process, transport, and document the disposal of all waste—including general, animal carcasses, medical, pathological, chemical, and radioactive waste—by autoclaving or other appropriate means. Document all Core Safety duties, such as preparing and dispensing decontaminating solutions, cleaning and waxing floors, washing windows, emptying waste containers, decontaminating supplies and equipment, sterilizing laboratory clothing and footwear, storing and distributing bulk supplies, and operating sterilizers. Maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment on hand and notify the Contract Project Manager of needs, providing quotes as required. Receive, inspect, and store shipments of supplies and equipment; reject damaged or incorrect items, uncrate and assemble equipment, and ensure items are correct upon receipt. Complete and document all required trainings, entering documentation of training, experience, and certifications into record systems as designated. Travel up to a 75‑mile radius to observe or develop novel animal care approaches as required by government requirements with proper approvals. Participate in continuing education at no extra cost, coordinating through the Contract Project Manager. Provide training to USAMRIID personnel as requested, covering animal observation, safe work practices, and animal husbandry topics in the research environment. Notify the Contract Project Manager of absences in advance and report illness or injury, new prescriptions, medication changes, or travel that could affect health to the Certifying Official and CMA. Enroll in and meet the Controlled Substance Personnel Reliability Program requirements. Enroll in and meet the Biological Personnel Reliability Program and Select Agent requirements, initiating all administrative enrollment requirements within one month of the start date and completing unsupervised access requirements within twelve months unless extended. Qualifications Necessary Skills and Knowledge Apply practical knowledge and technical expertise to resolve problems independently and in cooperation with others. Work proficiently in Microsoft Word, SharePoint, MS Teams, Excel, Outlook, and other required software systems. Minimum Qualifications LAT certification or higher, as defined by AALAS, required prior to or within twelve months of hire. At least three years’ veterinary technical experience supporting NHPs in a research setting. Experience in ABSL‑3 and/or ABSL‑4 settings is highly desirable. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. U.S. Citizenship required. Variable work hours including 24/7 coverage, evenings, nights, weekends, government holidays, and unforeseen closures to meet mission requirements. Ability to obtain and maintain a favorably adjudicated Secret security clearance eligibility (no classified access). NACLC/ANACI acceptable if completed within five years prior to enrollment. Ability to pass a drug test. Preferred Qualifications GLP experience desirable. Experience with rodents, swine, rabbits, and ferrets in a research setting highly desirable.
