Registered Nurse - Post Anesthesia Care Unit

Job Summary

Provides specialized nursing care to patients recovering from anesthesia and surgical procedures. Monitors airway, hemodynamic status, pain and level of consciousness during the immediate post-operative period, intervening promptly when complications arise. Prepares patients for discharge or transfer and provides post-operative education to patients and families.

Education & Experience

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing: Required
• Post Anesthesia Care Unit, critical care or perioperative nursing experience: Required

Licenses & Certifications

• Registered Nurse licensure in the state of practice: Required
• Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification: Required

Key Responsibilities

• Receive handoff from anesthesia and surgical teams and complete a full post-anesthesia assessment.
• Monitor airway, respiratory status, hemodynamics, level of consciousness and pain throughout recovery.
• Administer medications, fluids and blood products in accordance with physician orders.
• Recognize and respond to post-anesthesia complications, escalating to the anesthesia provider as needed.
• Apply discharge criteria and prepare patients for transfer to the inpatient unit or discharge home.
• Provide post-operative instructions and education to patients and their families.
