Senior Patient Access Specialist

Senior Patient Access Specialist Location: Bon Secours - Harbour View Medical Center, Suffolk, VA (onsite) Compensation & Benefits Hourly pay range: $18.65 - $19.90/hr, based on experience Bonus incentives, paid certifications, tuition reimbursement, comprehensive benefits, career advancement Responsibilities Assign accurate MRNs, complete medical necessity/compliance checks, provide patient instructions, collect insurance information, receive and process physician orders using the overlay tool, and deliver excellent customer service measured by Press Ganey. Operate the telephone switchboard for incoming, outgoing, and inter‑office calls. Utilize quality auditing and reporting systems to ensure accounts are corrected, including for other employees, departments, and facilities. Develop training materials and programs for new hires and provide continued education to associates across the revenue cycle. Develop and maintain staff schedules within the patient access department. Handle on‑call responsibilities, including after‑hours support and guidance, and cover unscheduled staffing needs as required. Collect point‑of‑service payments, conduct audits, ensure accurate and timely completion of all forms, and provide statistical data to leadership; hold accountable for point‑of‑service goals. Explain general consent for treatment forms, obtain necessary signatures and witness names, and distribute patient education documents such as Medicare messages, observation forms, and consent forms. Review eligibility responses in the insurance verification system, select applicable insurance plan codes, enter benefit data, and support POS and billing processes, including pre‑registration of patient accounts. Screen for medical necessity using ABN software, inform Medicare patients of potential non‑payment, distribute and document ABN and other designated forms. Perform any other job‑related duties as required by the supervisor, subject to reasonable accommodation. Experience 1 to 3 years of related experience. Must be inquisitive and demonstrate openness to innovation, including AI, to improve processes and patient/client experiences. Education Associate degree or equivalent experience. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Understanding of revenue cycle, including admissions, billing, payments, and denials. Comprehensive knowledge of patient insurance processes for authorizations and benefits verification. Knowledge of health insurance requirements and medical terminology, CPT codes, or procedure codes.
