School Nurse – RN

Location: Nyack, NY
Setting: School-Based / Special Education
Schedule: Monday–Friday, School Hours

Position Summary

We are seeking a compassionate and experienced Registered Nurse (RN) to provide school-based nursing services to students in the Nyack, NY area . The School Nurse will be responsible for supporting the health, safety, and well-being of students throughout the school day, including children with special needs, developmental disabilities, chronic medical conditions, and individualized healthcare needs .

The ideal candidate will have strong pediatric or school nursing skills, excellent communication abilities, and a patient, compassionate approach to working with children of varying ages and abilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide direct nursing care to students during the school day, including students with special needs and complex healthcare requirements .
• Assess and respond to student illnesses, injuries, and medical emergencies.
• Administer prescribed medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders, school policies, and applicable regulations.
• Monitor students with chronic or complex medical conditions such as asthma, diabetes, seizure disorders, severe allergies, feeding needs, and other health conditions .
• Provide appropriate care for students who may require G-tube/feeding support, seizure precautions, mobility assistance, or other individualized nursing interventions , when applicable.
• Develop, implement, and follow Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) and Emergency Care Plans as appropriate.
• Review student health records, medical orders, immunization information, and required health documentation.
• Maintain accurate and confidential nursing documentation for all assessments, treatments, medication administration, and student encounters.
• Communicate with parents/guardians regarding illnesses, injuries, changes in condition, or other health-related concerns.
• Collaborate closely with teachers, special education staff, therapists, school administrators, and other members of the student's educational and healthcare team.
• Participate in IEP/504 planning and meetings when appropriate to help ensure that medical needs are safely addressed within the educational environment.
• Recognize changes in a student's physical or behavioral condition and initiate appropriate nursing interventions.
• Provide first aid and emergency nursing care and follow established emergency response protocols.
• Educate students and school staff regarding health conditions, medications, emergency procedures, infection prevention, and other health-related needs when appropriate.
• Help maintain a safe, supportive, and inclusive school environment for all students.

Qualifications

• Current and unrestricted New York State Registered Nurse (RN) license .
• Current CPR/BLS certification .
• Previous school nursing, pediatric, special education, home care, community health, or similar nursing experience strongly preferred.
• Experience caring for children with special needs, developmental disabilities, or medically complex conditions is highly desirable.
• Knowledge of medication administration, seizure management, allergy/anaphylaxis protocols, diabetes management, and emergency nursing procedures.
• Ability to recognize and respond appropriately to medical emergencies.
• Strong documentation, assessment, organizational, and communication skills.
• Compassionate and patient demeanor with the ability to establish positive relationships with students, families, and school personnel.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and comply with applicable school, healthcare, and student privacy requirements.
