Commercial Relationship Manager – Greater Washington Market

Location: Washington, D.C. / Northern Virginia

Opportunity Overview

A well-capitalized regional financial institution is expanding its commercial banking presence across Washington, D.C. and Northern Virginia and is selectively adding Commercial Relationship Managers to a developing team.

This is an opportunity for an entrepreneurial commercial banker who wants to build a market rather than simply inherit and maintain a portfolio .

The organization is investing in the region as a strategic growth market and is looking for relationship managers who can develop new commercial relationships, build meaningful community connections and create profitable relationships across lending, deposits and treasury management.

Responsibilities

• Originate new commercial banking relationships across Washington, D.C. and/or Northern Virginia
• Develop a pipeline of privately held businesses and commercial prospects
• Structure and originate appropriate commercial credit opportunities
• Generate core deposits and treasury management relationships
• Build relationships with business owners, executives and financial decision-makers
• Develop productive centers of influence and referral partnerships
• Maintain an active presence in local business, nonprofit and community organizations
• Partner with credit, treasury and other internal specialists to deliver comprehensive banking solutions
• Manage relationships based on overall profitability and long-term potential
• Contribute to the development of a growing commercial banking franchise

Ideal Candidate Profile

• Commercial banking or related business banking experience
• Approximately 2+ years of direct commercial banking experience preferred; experienced producers strongly encouraged
• Demonstrated ability to develop new relationships
• Strong understanding of commercial credit
• Ability to identify deposit and treasury opportunities in addition to lending needs
• Established relationships within D.C., Northern Virginia or a defined submarket within the region preferred
• Existing COI and community relationships highly valued
• Experience with privately held growth companies preferred
• Government contracting, technology, nonprofit, professional services or related market expertise is advantageous
• Entrepreneurial and highly self-directed
• Collaborative relationship-building style
• Comfortable spending significant time in the market with clients, prospects and referral sources
• Strong executive presence and communication skills

Preferred Business Characteristics

Candidates do not need to bring a specific portable portfolio to be considered.

The strongest candidates will instead demonstrate:

• A history of personally originating relationships
• Active commercial prospect and COI networks
• Ability to generate both credit and non-credit opportunities
• Relationships with privately held businesses and their owners
• Experience operating in the lower-middle commercial market
• Credibility within a specific geographic or industry community
• A repeatable approach to building a pipeline from the ground up

Not a Fit If You

• Primarily want to manage an inherited portfolio
• Prefer a desk-based or internally focused role
• Define commercial banking exclusively through loan production
• Depend primarily on internal referrals to generate business
• Have limited interest in community or COI development
• Want a mature territory where the infrastructure and client base have already been built
• Are uncomfortable prospecting and creating new relationships
• Prefer rigid organizational silos over a collaborative growth environment

Compensation

The organization offers a competitive compensation and benefits package aligned with experience, market knowledge, production capability and the scope of the role.
