Job ID: 1358 Position: 2026-2027 STEM Teacher (K-Grade 5) Location: Van Derveer Elementary School Available: September 1, 2026 Q ualifications: Required: New Jersey Department of Education certification in Elementary Education (grades K-6 or K-8). Preferred: Additional certification in STEM, science, technology, computer science, media literacy, engineering design, or related areas is preferred. Experience teaching or supporting STEM, science, technology, coding, robotics, design thinking, engineering design, media literacy, or project-based learning is preferred. Familiarity with tools or platforms such as Google Workspace for Education, Code.org, Scratch, ScratchJr, elementary-appropriate robots, makerspace materials, animation tools, or video production tools is preferred. Experience developing curriculum, units, projects, or learning experiences for elementary students is preferred. Somerville Public Schools seeks an enthusiastic and innovative K-5 STEM Teacher to design and deliver engaging, hands-on STEM instruction as part of the elementary specials rotation. The STEM Teacher will create a student-centered learning environment where students explore, question, design, build, test, collaborate, and reflect. Key Responsibilities Inspire students in grades K-5 to explore STEM through coding, robotics, engineering design, digital creation, media literacy, problem solving, and real-world applications. Design and implement hands-on, inquiry-based, and project-based STEM lessons as part of the elementary specials rotation. Align instruction to the New Jersey Student Learning Standards, including connections to science, computer science and design thinking, career readiness, and digital literacy. Support students in using the design thinking and/or engineering design process to identify problems, brainstorm solutions, build prototypes, test ideas, and improve their work. Contribute to the continued development of an engaging elementary STEM program. Create an inclusive learning environment that promotes creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and responsible technology use. Desired Knowledge and Skills Ability to design engaging, developmentally appropriate STEM lessons for elementary students. Strong skills in lesson planning, classroom management, assessment, and curriculum development. Ability to integrate educational resources, technology tools, and hands-on materials into instruction. Comfort using data and student feedback to make informed instructional decisions. Growth mindset and openness to professional learning, coaching, and reflection. Salary and Benefits: In accordance with the Somerville Education Association, the annual salary range for this position is $73,349-$104,349. Placement on the salary guide and access to benefits is per the SEA CBA.
