Job Overview Inspector II – District Four/Director of Operations / District Maintenance / West Palm Beach Maintenance‑Admin/West Palm Beach Maint – Eng/Contracts. This position ensures work completed by others within FDOT right‑of‑way meets all standards and is permitted through the Department. It also is responsible for on‑site inspections and monitoring work activities to maintain compliance with state and federal specifications, plans, permits, policies, procedures, statutes, and rules. Responsibilities Perform independent complex technical assignments to accomplish inspection and monitoring within the state right‑of‑way. Verify that work is performed according to all State and Federal specifications, plans, permits, policies, procedures, statutes, and rules. Perform approved testing techniques using hand tools, gauges and/or instruments to ensure materials used comply with FDOT requirements. Interpret governing documents related to authorized Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) device usage, installation/placement, and materials to ensure safe work zones. Review work site activities for conformity to safety regulations and take corrective measures when deficiencies are noted. Prepare records and reports for work completed and related documents accurately and in a timely manner to validate payments to roadway contractors. Conduct surveys of signs, guardrails, and attenuators as required; inventory roadway items for the Roadway Characteristics Inventory (RCI); fill out data coding sheets and enter data into computer database. Assist in the preparation of maintenance contracts and prepare specifications as needed. Conduct or attend pre‑work conferences on maintenance contracts and meetings with contractors, utility owners, and permittees throughout the life of projects. Represent the Department on all issues related to contracts and permits and issue work documents as directed. Perform plans reviews for constructability and adherence to Department standards and specifications; provide comments on Department policies and procedures as requested. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of conducting field inspections of worksites for compliance with FDOT roadway standards; entering and retrieving information from a computer database. Skills in communicating technical information verbally and in writing; understanding and interpreting plans, specifications, design standards, and manuals; dealing with internal and external customers courteously; PC use and database understanding; organizing records and handling multiple tasks. Abilities to remain calm and effective under pressure; work effectively as a team member; follow oral and written instructions; use word‑processor software; lift 50 pounds and perform physical activities such as stoop, climb, squat, push, crawl, and bend. Other Job‑Related Requirements Complete self‑study courses in Construction Math and Plans Reading within 11 months of appointment. Obtain Advanced Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) certification and Qualified Stormwater Management Inspector certification within one year and maintain them. Drive a state‑owned or leased vehicle as required during on‑duty status. Hold a valid Class E Driver License; shall have an acceptable driving record per department policy. May be required to work with or around hazardous materials, work nights and weekends, and be available for emergency response work as necessary. Minimum Qualifications High School Diploma or Certificate of High School Equivalency. Class E Driver’s License. This position requires a valid Class E driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the department driver record requirements policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following: three or more moving violations in the past three years that accumulate three or more points per violation; any two convictions of reckless driving in the past three years; a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three years; and a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction in the past four years.
