Environmental Health Inspector - Consumer Protection (6120) - Citywide - H00189

Overview Under direction, the 6120 Consumer Protection Environmental Health Inspector conducts inspections of housing, industrial plants and premises, solid waste facilities and vehicles, sources of noise emission, fixed and mobile food facilities, and public health and safety hazards to enforce established laws, ordinances and regulations. The Inspector recommends appropriate actions to remedy situations, issues citations, prepares reports, implements environmental health programs and performs related duties as required. Responsibilities Enforce provisions of the health, housing, planning and air pollution codes and other applicable statutes and local ordinances. Investigate complaints involving buildings, abate illegal health, sanitary and safety conditions, coordinate with city departments, appear as witness in court litigation and testify in cases involving food establishments, housing and commercial buildings. Conduct complaint inspections of dwellings, hotels, apartment houses, business establishments and other multiple dwellings; check for sanitation, maintenance, light, ventilation, use and occupancy; detect violations; coordinate enforcement; make follow‑up inspections; prepare condemnation reports; appear and testify at condemnation hearings. Conduct complaint inspections at sites of noise sources; prepare legal notices; recommend corrective action; prepare cases for argument before the Variance Board. Conduct food and drink establishment inspections; detect violations; order corrections; recommend design modification; process permit applications; advise operators and employees; obtain samples for laboratory analyses; conduct foodborne illness investigations; recommend issuance or denial of permits; appear and testify at hearings; prepare related notices to courts and correspondence. Conduct miscellaneous inspections of facilities including laundry establishments, ambulatory homes for the aged, overnight animal boarding; investigate growth of poison oak and other noxious weeds; investigate refuse removal disputes; investigate lack of required refuse collection service; investigate infestations of rodents, mosquitoes; check construction applications for swimming pools; issue permits for small water supplies; inspect for cross connections and approve backflow prevention devices. Perform other special and miscellaneous duties as required. Qualifications Possession of a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) Certificate issued by the State of California Department of Public Health Services. Valid California Driver’s License.
