Job Title: Fitter/Fabricator - Richmond Job Description This role focuses on fitting and fabricating structural steel components according to detailed blueprints and layout specifications in a large steel fabrication facility. You will lay out, position, align, and fit together fabricated parts, perform heat corrections, and ensure all work meets required codes and tolerances. The position offers hands‑on training with overhead cranes and cutting and heating torches, as well as opportunities to work on complex jigs and assemblies in a growing operation. Responsibilities Lay out, position, align, and fit together fabricated structural steel parts according to blueprints and layout specifications. Interpret and work from complex blueprints, drawings, and other technical documents to ensure accurate fabrication and assembly. Perform structural fitting on beams and steel shapes, ensuring components meet specified dimensions and tolerances. Accurately perform complex heat corrections on structural members while adhering to applicable codes and specifications. Check camber and sweep tolerances of beams and other steel shapes and make necessary corrections to meet required standards. Set up and work with complex jigs and assemblies to support efficient and precise fabrication processes. Identify and correct potential hazards in the work area and during fabrication activities, maintaining a strong focus on safety. Operate overhead cranes after training to move and position heavy steel components safely and efficiently. Use cutting and heating torches properly and safely as part of the fitting and fabrication process. Perform daily cleaning and basic maintenance of the work area and assigned equipment to maintain a safe and organized environment. Support the structural department by completing assigned fabrication and fitting tasks within established timelines. Collaborate with team members and follow shop procedures to ensure consistent quality and productivity. Essential Skills 2–24 years of experience working in a structural fitting role in a steel fabrication or similar environment. Proven ability to read and interpret blueprints and complex fabrication drawings. Demonstrated ability to fit structural steel components accurately to specified tolerances. Hands‑on experience with structural steel fabrication processes such as fitting and welding in a heavy industrial setting. Ability to work safely around overhead cranes, cutting torches, and other heavy fabrication equipment after receiving appropriate training. Strong attention to detail when checking camber, sweep, and other critical tolerances on beams and steel shapes. Capability to perform physical work in a loud, heavy industrial environment and in varying temperatures. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with flux core welding in structural steel applications. Exposure to MIG welding processes in a fabrication environment. Experience working with structural steel in a fabrication shop or structural department. Familiarity with setting up and working from complex jigs or assemblies. Ability to recognize and mitigate potential safety hazards in a fabrication shop. Comfort using cutting and heating torches as part of fitting and fabrication work. Strong organizational skills to maintain a clean and orderly work area. Why Work Here? Work Environment The position is based in a 200,000 square foot steel fabrication shop operating on first shift, Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with current work on Saturdays as needed. The facility is a heavy industrial environment with overhead cranes throughout the structure and a dedicated welding station for each fitter/fabricator. The building is not climate controlled, so it can be cold in the winter and extremely hot in the summer, and candidates should be comfortable working in these conditions. The shop is loud and active, with a strong emphasis on safety and adherence to safety procedures at all times. Required attire and personal protective equipment include steel toe boots and safety glasses, and employees must bring their own welding gloves and welding gear appropriate for the work performed. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Richmond, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $26.00 - $32.00/hr.
