Automation Controls Engineer - Denver Metro

AAP Automation, a division of OTC Industrial Technologies, is looking for an experienced Automation Controls Engineer to join our team in Englewood, CO — just south of Denver. This is a hands‑on engineering role where you'll own projects end‑to‑end, from design and PLC/HMI programming through implementation and commissioning, across a diverse range of customers in one of the most active automation markets in the Mountain West. What's In It For You Competitive Compensation: $85,000 – $105,000 base salary plus bonus eligibility Project Ownership: Independently execute projects from $0 to ~$100,000+ — full scope, full accountability, full credit Advanced Technology: Work across Omron, Mitsubishi, Allen Bradley, Siemens, robotics, AMRs, servo systems, and more — broad platform exposure, not repetitive maintenance work Collaborative Engineering Team: Partner with a greater systems engineering team on larger-scale projects ($100K+) with regional target customers Comprehensive Benefits: Medical, dental, vision + 401(k) with 50% match up to 6%, unlimited PTO, tuition assistance, and career advancement support Who Thrives Here The Project Owner: You're energized by taking a project from scope to commissioning and seeing it run Platform-Fluent: Omron and Mitsubishi are your home base — and you're comfortable learning new platforms as the work demands Solutions-Oriented: You think across mechanical, electrical, and software simultaneously and find the cleanest path to a working system Relationship Builder: As comfortable presenting to a customer as you are programming at a workbench Self-Directed: Able to manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast‑paced environment with limited supervision What You'll Do Own projects end-to-end: Interpret customer specifications and scopes of work; execute all aspects of automation projects from order to implementation including mechanical/electrical drawings, PLC/HMI programming, robotics/AMRs, and all peripheral devices; manage multiple projects simultaneously up to ~$100K independently Engineer solutions: Design and develop customized automation systems across mechanical design, electrical design, PLC programming, HMI screens, robotics, and safety; specify all components needed for project completion and provide all CAD drawings Support & improve existing systems: Provide technical support, problem solving, maintenance, and continuous improvement for existing automated equipment; lead remediation, migration, and upgrade efforts for existing control systems Collaborate & deliver: Partner with the greater systems engineering team on larger projects ($100,000+); work with the quote desk to generate proposals; provide world‑class technical support to OTC sellers, customers, and vendors Participate in capital projects: Support new installations, testing, and modernization projects; implement and modify programming and HMI screens across Allen Bradley, Omron, Mitsubishi, Exor, Codesys, Siemens, and more What You'll Need Experience & Education: Bachelor's degree in an Engineering related field; minimum 7 years of experience in the automation industry; broad knowledge of electrical and automation devices Platform Requirements: Omron & Mitsubishi required; servo experience required; Allen Bradley, Siemens, and additional platform experience a plus; SCADA experience a plus; Fanuc, Motoman, Denso, or Kuka robotics experience a plus Technical Skills: Knowledge of drafting techniques and engineering terminology; ability to create detailed mechanical and electrical drawings; experience with industrial safety application equipment (light curtains, safety relays, door switches, safety scanners); Unidraf knowledge a plus; strong mechanical aptitude a plus Core Competencies: Well-developed problem solving, communication, and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to learn and apply technical product information; proven performance in complex markets with diverse customer segments; strong organizational skills and ability to calculate figures including discounts, profit margins, and unit conversions Tools & Standards: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint); knowledge of codes and standards within the automation industry; able to operate independently in a high‑pace, dynamic environment About AAP Automation AAP Automation is a division of OTC Industrial Technologies — one of the largest industrial distribution and service companies in the U.S. Our Denver Metro team delivers customized automation solutions across robotics, motion control, PLC systems, and advanced controls to customers throughout the Mountain West region.
