Senior Specialist, Electrical Drafter
MP Materials Corp.
Job Description
Job Description
Company Overview:
MP Materials (NYSE: MP) is rebuilding American industrial capability for a new era of autonomy, robotics, and electrification.
We are the only U.S. company with a fully integrated rare earth supply chain—from mining and refining to advanced metal and magnet manufacturing. Our products include both the critical materials used to make permanent magnets and the finished magnets themselves—enabling next-generation technologies in robotics, automation, aerospace, transportation, defense, and energy systems. These materials are the foundation of physical AI—the convergence of computation, movement, and control.
We hire ambitious, mission-driven people who want to tackle complex challenges and shape the future of strategic industries. Our culture is rooted in teamwork, resiliency, and integrity, with a deep commitment to operational excellence and national purpose. MP is rapidly evolving from a materials producer into a leading U.S. manufacturer—and our people are driving that transformation.
Position Overview:
We are seeking a Senior Specialist, Electrical Drafter to join our growing Electrical Engineering team. This role will play a central part in the development and execution of electrical and control system designs for a new greenfield manufacturing facility. The ideal candidate is technically strong, detail-oriented, and eager to contribute throughout all stages of the engineering lifecycle—from concept to commissioning.
You will work closely with electrical engineers, process and mechanical teams, and project stakeholders to generate accurate, code-compliant electrical and control system documentation. This is a highly collaborative, fast-paced role for a self-driven individual who thrives on solving complex design challenges in a multidisciplinary environment.
Position Responsibilities:
- Independently create and revise 2D and 3D electrical and control system drawings, including, Wiring diagrams, schematics, and control panel layouts, Network connectivity drawings and cable routing plans, Bills of Materials (BOMs) and related documentation.
- Translate engineering concepts, specifications, and field inputs into accurate, construction-ready drawings.
- Integrate applicable codes and standards (NEC, NEMA, IEC, ISA) into all design work to ensure compliance and consistency.
- Maintain and update design documentation throughout the project lifecycle—from Front-End Loading (FEL) to as-built record sets.
- Organize, manage, and archive all drawings and related files according to MP Materials' document control protocols.
- Collaborate closely with electrical engineers, technicians, and contractors to validate field requirements, troubleshoot design issues, and ensure accuracy.
- Review and incorporate vendor submittals, equipment data, and third-party drawings into internal design packages.
- Provide design labor estimates and assist with project planning, resource scheduling, and procurement processes.
- Support field construction and commissioning by issuing updated drawings, resolving RFIs, and validating as built documentation.
- Perform detailed self-checks and peer-reviews of drawing sets for accuracy, clarity, compliance, and completeness.
- Participate in formal design reviews at key project milestones (proof-of-concept, engineering acceptance, IFC).
- Recommend improvements to internal drafting processes, templates, and standards based on field experience and design outcomes.
- Maintain strict version control and revision tracking across all drawing sets and associated documentation.
- Manage and maintain secure archives of both digital and physical drawings, including "hot copy" files used during construction.
- Coordinate across disciplines (electrical, mechanical, process, controls) to ensure cohesive system integration.
- Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, contractors, and engineering consultants to align design expectations and resolve design-related challenges.
- Proactively support knowledge sharing and design consistency across teams through standardization and best practice documentation.
Basic Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in 2D and 3D electrical drafting and design, supporting industrial or manufacturing projects.
- Proficient in AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, Revit, and SolidWorks.
- Strong knowledge of electrical system design, including power distribution, switchgear, motor control centers (MCCs), PLCs, instrumentation, and control systems.
- Experienced with document control across all project phases (FEL through as-built).
- Skilled in interpreting and applying relevant codes and standards such as NEC, NEMA, IEC, ISA, NFPA, and OSHA.
- Proven ability to work productively with electrical and controls engineers, technicians, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience integrating vendor and contractor documentation into project deliverables.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify and resolve design issues independently.
- Effective communicator with the ability to advocate for design solutions to engineers, project managers, and operations personnel.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and other project documentation and coordination tools.
- Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to manage multiple tasks and shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety, with an understanding of occupational hazards and appropriate precautions.
- Self-motivated, dependable, and detail-oriented contributor with a passion for quality and continuous improvement.
Desired Qualities:
- Demonstrates a strong ability to identify gaps in specifications or documentation and propose practical, effective design solutions. Committed to delivering win-win outcomes that drive project success.
- Solid understanding of medium-voltage (MV) and high-voltage (HV) electrical distribution systems, including UPS systems, diesel/gas generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units (PDUs), variable frequency drives (VFDs), and automatic/static transfer switches (ATS/STS).
- Familiar with building and life safety codes, including NFPA, NEC, OSHA, and other applicable standards for industrial and manufacturing facilities.
- Exceptionally detail-oriented, with a proven ability to produce accurate, complete, and comprehensive design documentation. Consistently meets deadlines and project milestones.
- Quick to assimilate new technologies, systems, and engineering concepts. Able to apply this understanding to improve the quality and effectiveness of drafting deliverables.
- Highly organized and adept at managing multiple priorities across concurrent projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Self-motivated, reliable, and collaborative team player who thrives in multidisciplinary settings. Passionate about continuous improvement and maintaining high-quality design standards.
