Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI)

Summary This position performs Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) of the head, neck, spine, chest, and body, with and without contrast, to achieve diagnostic studies that support proper diagnosis and treatment. Qualifications Citizen of the United States. Certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT). Advanced ARRT certification required for MRI and CT. Completion of a full‑time training program of at least 24 months in an accredited diagnostic radiologic technology program. Proficient in spoken and written English. Minimum of one year of DRT experience, creditable after basic certification, with experience in MRI modalities and knowledge of superconducting magnet physics, safety, and PACS/CR. Must be able to function at GS‑9 level, with expectations for technical KSAs such as balancing patient and staff needs, gathering medical record information, assessing contraindications, and providing first‑aid, aseptic technique, and pre‑procedural care. Responsibilities Schedule MRI examinations efficiently while accommodating emergency cases. Consult with radiologists to determine requirements for non‑standard exams. Determine technical parameters (positioning, scan number, slice thickness) to ensure comprehensive imaging. Add complementary sequences when necessary. Notify radiologists or referring physicians of scans requiring immediate attention. Work collaboratively with the radiologic team. Maintain alertness to patient condition and provide patient safety related to contrast administration. Insert IV needles for contrast when needed. Use MRI screening forms, patient interviews, and metal detection for safety. Complete annual MRI safety review. Other duties as assigned. Work Schedule Mon–Fri 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Alternating weekend hours Saturday–Sunday 9:00 AM–5:00 PM. Hours are variable; ability to work rotating weekends and holidays required. Physical Requirements Heavy lifting of 45 pounds or more, carrying, pulling, and pushing. Walking, standing, and repeated bending for 8–12 hours. Rapid mental and muscular coordination. Near vision correctable to 13–16 cm, far vision 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other. Depth perception and color discrimination. Hearing within limits (aids permitted). The incumbent may handle infected patients, use protective clothing, and manage combative patients.
