Residence requirements: There are no residency requirements for participation in this examination. There is one vacancy at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation. The technologist salary is $78,250 - $84,228 annually and the trainee salary starts $76,198-$82,006 annually.

If you pass the examination, your name will appear on the continuous eligible list for one year. After one year, your name will be removed from the list. You may apply for retest at six month intervals.

Examples of Duties

A Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Technologist performs technical and quality assurance functions associated with MRI, Computed Tomography (CT) and radiographic procedures at the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC);

Performs or assists with MRI, CT and radiographic procedures, to include pre and post processing of images, following prescribed protocols;

Prepares equipment and supplies; Prepares and positions patients for imaging using appropriate positioning aids to ensure patient safety;

Processes images and prepares/files images for interpretation and report distribution/archive;

Reviews images for technical accuracy and determines need for retakes or additional views;

Injects contrast pharmaceuticals via venous access as required by the New York State Department of Health, following department guidelines; reports any adverse drug reactions;

Administers ionizing radiation;

Performs and documents health teaching/patient screening and inquires related to contrast history;

Schedules and/or prioritizes procedures to ensure timely procedure completion;

Coordinates the scheduling and care of patients with other departments, such as anesthesia, emergency room, physician's offices and other facilities;

Arranges for and/or performs appropriate patient transport to and from radiology department; Inspects and keeps images, computer/digital, electronic transfer, processing and ancillary equipment in safe working order to ensure proper and safe performance before patient procedures are initiated; informs supervisor, co-workers or repair staff of needed maintenance;

Performs mandated regulatory compliance tasks and quality control in accordance with federal, state and local authorities and accrediting bodies;

Meets with vendors to discuss existing and new products; provides related education/training to co-workers;

Serves as a mentor and participates in the orientation of staff and students;

Participates in new technology/product in-services, training programs and meetings and serves on committees

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet the following requirements on or before the date of application:

Graduation from an accredited school of Radiologic Technology and one (1) year of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) or Computed Tomography (CT) experience.

Possession of a license and current registration to practice as a Radiologic Technologist as issued by the New York State Department of Health at the time of application, appointment and throughout continued employment;

Possession of American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT) Certification with Radiology Primary Credential at the time of application and maintenance throughout duration of appointment;

Possession and maintenance of certification to administer contrast media intravenously issued by New York State Department of Health, in accordance with New York Codes, Rules and Regulations, Title 10, Part 89.40, at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment;

Possession and maintenance of Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from an ECMCC approved provider at time of appointment and maintenance throughout duration of appointment.

Candidates must pass a safety and screening test for American College of Radiology MRI designated areas of Zone III (outside the immediate scanning area) and Zone IV (magnet room). Medical or electronic devices may interfere with the exam or potentially pose a risk. In consideration of the need for the safety of employees assigned to this area, random safety and screening will be performed.

Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States and its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency. Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirements.

Transcripts will now be accepted by the Department of Personnel ONLY at time of application. All subsequent transcripts must be submitted at time of interview.

Supplemental Information

The only subject of examination will be an evaluation of your training and experience. You are therefore, asked to include in your application a summary of all pertinent training and experience in sufficient detail so that your background may be evaluated against the duties of the position.

In your summary of training include all college course work, formal in-service training, and seminars you have attended. You must specify either the number of credits received or the number of contact hours and dates of attendance. Also include a copy of your professional license. Specify the date that your license was first issued.

In your summary of experience, you must specify the dates of your employment, the number of hours worked per week, your title, and the main duties for each. Be specific; vagueness and ambiguity will NOT be resolved in your favor. Candidates who submit incomplete applications or documentation may be disqualified.

Completed forms should then be returned to the Erie County Personnel Department. In addition, candidates must request their colleges to send transcripts to the Erie County Personnel Department or attach transcripts to your application. No applications will be evaluated until all the above information, including transcripts, is received.

If you expect to enter military service, you may still compete in this examination and may be appointed or reinstated after you return home from active duty.

Candidates may be investigated or called for an interview to determine whether they qualified for appointment. In addition to meeting specific requirements, candidates and appointees must be of good moral character and habits.

Candidates may be subject to a thorough background investigation to determine suitability for appointment. Applicants may be required to authorize access to educational, employment, criminal history and other records check as part of such investigation. Criminal convictions or other offense are subject to evaluation and may result in disqualification. Applicant will be required to submit the necessary fees for the fingerprint processing, where required.

Disabled and non-disabled veterans as defined in Section 85, New York State Civil Service Law, will have 5 and 2.5 points, respectively, added to their earned scores if successful in the examination. You should claim these credits when you file application but you have an option to waive them any time prior to appointment. If you have already used these credits you may not claim them again. A $15.00 filing fee is required for this exam. If applying online the payment process will be outlined. When submitting by mail or hand delivering, the required fee must accompany your application. A waiver of application fee will be allowed if you are unemployed and primarily responsible for the support of a household. In addition, a waiver of application fee will be allowed if you are determined eligible for Medicaid, or receiving Supplemental Security Income payments, or Public Assistance (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families/Family Assistance or Safety Net Assistance) or are certified Job Training Partnership Act/Workforce Investment Act eligible through a State or local social service agency.
