Genetic Counseling Assistant

Position Summary The Genetic Counseling Assistant supports the BUMC genetics team with referral triage, operational workflow, documentation preservation, patient care coordination, variant database management, administrative meeting support, and assistance in genetic testing coordination. Position: Genetic Counseling Assistant. Department: Pediatric Specialties Clinic. Schedule: 40 hours. Essential Responsibilities / Duties Support the clinical genetics team across Boston University Medical Campus for all patients and families receiving genetic services and molecular testing. Work closely with the genetics medical director and lead genetic counselor to provide administrative support of diverse aspects of the genetics service. Perform administrative functions, including triaging incoming cases to appropriate divisions. Optimize operational workflows such as prior authorization, informed consent documentation, and pedigree collection. Assist in coordination of care for complex patients and re‑engage patients lost to care. Oversee a database of variants of uncertain significance for genetic testing across the institution, triage reports to appropriate divisions, and verify critical notifications. Attend Medical Genetics Oversight and Genetic Testing Workgroup meetings to provide administrative support. Assist with the creation of educational and promotional materials for medical staff and patients. Participate in performance/quality improvement projects, track the status of genetic testing, and perform other duties as assigned. Minimum commitment of 1 year. Job Requirements Education: Bachelor’s degree in a biological/health science or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience: experience in a clinical environment is preferred. Knowledge and Skills: Comfortable working with a diverse population and interacting with medical personnel. Effective oral and written communication with clinicians and patients. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team in a fast‑paced environment. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team. Excellent organizational skills, multitasking ability, and attention to detail. Initiative, problem‑solving, resourcefulness, and troubleshooting skills. Flexibility in response to changing demands. Proficiency in MS Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Proficiency in Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Portuguese is appreciated. Compensation Compensation Range: $21.39–$30.05 per hour, based on minimum job qualifications.
