About the Role:The New York Times is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join the Content Data Products team. You will report to an engineering manager and partner with engineers, product and project managers, data scientists, newsroom along with others to build systems that turn NYT's archive of publishing content into data products. Our teams and external partners will use these tools to obtain insights and build experiences based on NYT content.The Content Data Products team sits within the Publishing group at the New York Times. The Publishing group is responsible for the content management system for all of the Times. It empowers development teams to build and evolve experiences with speed, and provides editors and creators with a unified suite of tools they can use with confidence to make the world's best journalism.This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters. You can typically expect to come into the office 2 days/week.Responsibilities:Collaborate with product, design, other engineers, and newsroom partners to build content data products and APIs within the NYT's publishing platform, including internal data solutions and external offeringsTake ownership of features or components, driving them from requirements gathering through design, implementation, QA, deployment, and monitoringUse AI to process our archive and turn unstructured data into structured data, while developing a deep understanding of what we're building and how to use itEnsure a high degree of code quality, security, and system observabilityDrive architectural excellence through rigorous code reviews, mentorship, and by establishing best practices for high concurrency, data-intensive systemsChampion a "quality-first" culture by architecting automated testing frameworks that ensure service reliability at scaleBe a mentor to other software engineers to promote their growthDemonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.Basic Qualifications:5+ years of software engineering experienceFluency in backend technologies (Go, Python, Java or similar) and SQL databasesExperience designing and building data backend services and APIs that other teams can build onExperience with data feeds developmentExperience with CI/CD concepts and toolingExperience with infrastructure orchestration and familiarity with cloud computing platforms like GCP or AWSUnderstanding of application and data security best practicesExcellent verbal and written communication skillsDemonstrated experience working collaboratively as a part of a cross-functional teamPreferred Qualifications:Front-end familiarity (JavaScript, React) to contribute across the stack when neededUnderstanding of data modeling, data warehousing, ETL/ELT processes, data pipelines, and data architectureExperience with AI/MLExperience with Content Management SystemsExperience with metadata and taggingFamiliarity with extracting or digitizing content from multiple sources#LI-HybridREQ-020303The annual base pay range for this role is between:$140,000—$160,000 USDAdditional Compensation and BenefitsFor roles in the U.S., dependent on your role, you may be eligible for variable pay, such as an annual bonus and restricted stock.
