Physician (Hematology Oncology)

Summary The Staff Physician - Hematology Oncologist’s primary role is to provide clinical care in Hematology and Oncology and to oversee the education of Fellows, Residents, and Medical Students within his/her practice area. Qualifications Applicants must meet the basic requirements listed below, plus any additional requirements stated in the job announcement. Those pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy). Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (Approved residencies include ACGME, AOA, or other residencies followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.) Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) may be appointed if they are fully licensed and meet the residency criteria, but they are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Board eligible or board certified in Internal Medicine and Hematology/Oncology. Physical examination required prior to placement; must meet the physical requirements of the position (stand, walk, handle multiple priorities, etc.). Mental/sensory capabilities including recall, reasoning, problem‑solving, hearing, speaking clearly, writing legibly, reading, and logical thinking. Duties Administrative: Serve as acting chief of the section (if appropriate), provide guidance to Advanced Practice Providers, supervise medical students and residents, participate in medical center committees, assist in staff selection and promotion preparation, manage work schedules and assignments, adhere to agency and service level expectations for time and attendance, and participate in facility programs such as Continuous Quality Improvement teams. Clinical: Provide quality patient‑centered care to inpatients and outpatients, hold approved clinical privileges in Hematology and Oncology, maintain mandatory training for privileges, demonstrate sound decision‑making skills, diagnose and treat seriously ill patients, complete medical record documentation and trainee supervision attestations within prescribed timeframes, and develop and update care plans. Academic: Present teaching rounds, lectures, and conferences; participate in grading sessions for medical students and GME trainees; train trainees in medical procedures; assist in developing and implementing education and training programs; and meet scholarly activity requirements when applicable.
