RN - Correctional Health

Registered NurseThe Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care. This includes executing Licensed Independent Provider orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting in examinations and treatment of patients. Applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of individuals. Performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure. Applies appropriate nursing skills in the area and treatment of individuals. Attends sick call with the physician to see individuals and prepares a list of individuals to be examined. Prepares the examining room and equipment. Operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required. Calls Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders, and/or other emergencies. Examines and assesses new individuals with illnesses or injuries, referring them to the emergency room or other appropriate healthcare facility as required. Performs emergency procedures as needed and notifies Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders. Assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel and ensures their needs are addressed. Monitors, as directed, inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate. Provides guidance, supervision, and monitoring of nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff. Maintains a good working relationship with facility staff and nursing staff. Utilizes established corporate and facility policies and procedures in decision-making, using sound independent judgment. Regularly evaluates the provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of those services. Maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records. Assists in reviewing medical files to ensure all provided services are documented. Closely monitors all potential catastrophic illnesses. Audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary as directed or required. Complies with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances. Observes and records individual behavior. Inspects the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband and securely stores or safely disposes of supplies and equipment. Provides health counseling and health education on an individual or group basis as required. Assists in preparing and maintaining a variety of standard records, reports, and logs using appropriate grammar, and processes all reports and documents in a timely manner. Reads, analyzes, comprehends, and interprets medical and technical procedures, regulations, and legal documents. Processes and responds to lawsuits and attends court hearings when necessary. Facilitates, where applicable, accreditation of the medical program by providing required medical services.
