Data Scientist
The MITRE Corporation
At MITRE, your passion fuels work that impacts our nation and improves lives. This is where your skills strengthen national security, cybersecurity, health, transportation, and citizen services. We're a nonprofit engineering, applied research, and advanced technology organization working in the public interest. With objectivity and integrity at our core, we lead federally funded research and development centers for U.S. government agencies - collaborating with industry and academia to deliver integrated, high-impact solutions that advance our nation's health, security, and prosperity. Our people tackle the toughest technical challenges, supported by competitive benefits, meaningful career development, and a culture of innovation, collaboration, and technical excellence. Choose MITRE for a career with purpose - and help shape the future. MITRE operates six Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs), including the Center for Enterprise Modernization (CEM), which partners with public-sector organizations such as the Department of Commerce to tackle some of the nation's most important technical, economic, and policy challenges. Our team brings together engineers, data scientists, economists, and policy experts to help create economic growth and opportunity for all Americans. Our work spans a wide range of real-world problems, from designing and evaluating advanced sensors, wireless systems, and satellites, to analyzing spectrum, trade, and industrial policy, developing AI-enabled software and data-driven tools, and collaborating with government and industry to accelerate emerging technologies into practice. For early-career staff, this means the opportunity to work alongside experts across multiple disciplines, to apply technical skills to consequential national challenges, and to see your analysis directly inform decisions with public impact. MITRE is seeking an Intermediate Data Scientist to help shape how one of the nation's most critical and limited resources, the electromagnetic spectrum, is used to support both economic growth and national missions. You will analyze spectrum and RF data generated by testbeds, experiments, and spectrum studies, working alongside engineers and government sponsors to turn complex measurements and simulations into clear, actionable insights. Your work will help inform decisions that can open spectrum to new commercial technologies and services, enable continued U.S. innovation and competitiveness, and ensure that essential government systems can continue to operate effectively. Longer term, you will have a chance to apply your data engineering expertise to other missions at the Department of Commerce from economic analysis to building new satellites to modernizing the federal statistical system. Based on-site with our government sponsor in Boulder, Colorado, you will contribute directly to real-world spectrum research and decision-making. You will use statistical and data-science techniques to explore complex datasets, assess data quality, develop repeatable analysis workflows, and create visualizations that make technical results understandable and useful. You will collaborate with experts across data science, RF engineering, spectrum policy, and other disciplines while building your own technical expertise. This position will provide the opportunity to contribute to cutting edge internally funded research and development and to publish research in peer-reviewed journals. For an early-career professional, this role offers a unique opportunity to see your analysis move beyond the lab, helping inform decisions that influence the future of wireless technology, the U.S. innovation ecosystem, and the nation's technical landscape. Roles & Responsibilities: Spectrum/RF Data Analysis: Analyze measured, simulated, and derived spectrum/RF datasets from testbeds, experiments, and spectrum study plans using statistical and computational techniques. Reproducible Analytics: Develop and maintain repeatable analysis workflows for data cleaning, transformation, exploratory analysis, visualization, and statistical testing using tools such as Python, R, Stata, MATLAB, or similar environments. Data Quality & Validation: Perform data-quality checks, identify anomalies and gaps, document assumptions, and work with test engineers to understand collection conditions, instrumentation, and metadata. Spectrum Study Support: Support spectrum studies by translating study questions into analytical tasks, metrics, and visualizations using established methods and guidance from senior technical staff. Decision Support: Synthesize quantitative results into clear findings, charts, and technical inputs that help sponsors evaluate spectrum sharing, coexistence, and mission-protection tradeoffs. Collaboration: Work with RF engineers, data scientists, test personnel, and sponsor stakeholders to interpret results, resolve routine analytical questions, and contribute to team objectives. Documentation & Communication: Document methods and results, contribute to technical reports and briefings, and communicate moderately complex technical information clearly to technical teammates and sponsor partners. Basic Qualifications: Typically requires a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 2 years of related experience; or an advanced degree with relevant experience who can immediately contribute at this job step; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience Bachelor of Science (BS) or Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or another relevant quantitative or technical discipline. Experience applying data-science, statistical, or computational methods to technical or scientific data. Foundational knowledge of statistics, data analysis, experimental data, and visualization, with the ability to apply established analytical methods to routine problems. Ability to clean, organize, analyze, and interpret structured, time-series, or other scientific and engineering datasets. Familiarity with at least one analytical or programming environment such as Python, R, Stata, MATLAB, or a similar tool. Ability to document analytical methods and results, communicate technical findings clearly, and work effectively on multidisciplinary teams. Ability to work on-site at the government sponsor facility in Boulder, CO. This position requires a minimum of 3 days a week on-site. Preferred Qualifications: Experience with RF, wireless communications, electromagnetic spectrum, signal processing, test and evaluation, or scientific measurement data; familiarity with additional data-science tools or methods such as SQL, Git, Jupyter notebooks, statistical modeling, machine learning, geospatial analysis, or large time-series datasets is a plus. This requisition requires the candidate to have a minimum of the following clearance(s): None This requisition requires the hired candidate to have or obtain, within one year from the date of hire, the following clearance(s): None Salary compensation range and midpoint: $98,800 - $123,500 - $148,200 Annual Work Location Type: Onsite Commitment to Non-Discrimination All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to disability, status as a protected veteran or any other status protected by applicable federal, state, local or international law.
