Job Summary Under general supervision, operates various small motorized equipment for road construction and maintenance. Assists in laying pipe, shoveling, and other manual labor. All candidates conditionally offered transfer, promotion or initial hiring into a DOT/safety-sensitive position shall submit to testing for drugs and alcohol and test negative before performing any job functions that are safety-sensitive or require a CDL. External job applicants with a confirmed positive drug or alcohol test result shall be denied employment and shall be required to wait one year before applying for another position within Tulsa County. Essential Job Functions Operate various motorized equipment for road construction and maintenance such as tractor mower, single and tandem axle trucks, sand spreaders, wench truck, fuel truck, tractor-box blade, portable steelwheel roller. May train on the crack sealing machine and distributor. Haul equipment, workers and material for road work. May perform minor repairs in field to equipment. Pick up and deliver material for road work such as sand, gravel, asphalt. Perform manual labor on a construction or maintenance crew such as flagging traffic, shoveling asphalt and stone, raking hot asphalt, digging ditches and holes, loading or unloading materials and supplies. Collect and remove highway trash. Cut and clean grass and other vegetation from roadways. May perform minor maintenance duties on highway structures or grounds. May assist in manual tasks in the maintenance of equipment such as cleaning equipment, checking gasoline or oil supply, lubricating, dismantling and assembling machinery, cleaning mechanical parts. Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Skill in operating gas/diesel equipment as listed above; in making minor repairs to equipment. Knowledge of operation and maintenance of light construction equipment; of traffic laws and regulations pertaining to equipment used; of departmental policies and procedures; of limitations of equipment operated; and of safety rules and equipment. Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment used; to understand and follow oral and written instructions; to detect need for equipment repair; to maintain the physical stamina necessary to perform heavy manual labor; to work independently. Requires the use of simple arithmetic, simple drawings, power tools requiring adjustments and the keeping of simple records and over one year in highway construction or maintenance. Language Skills Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to supervisors and other employees of the organization. Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Valid Oklahoma Driver's License. Physical Demands The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, and climb or balance. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
