Deputy Sheriff - Law Enforcement

Description Performs general duty uniform patrol/law enforcement work to protect lives, property, and rights of the public for the York-Poquoson County Sheriff's Office. Answers complaint calls, patrols the County in an official vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle, or on foot to deter crime, apprehend violators or suspects, and investigate and secure crime scenes. Responsibilities also include serving legal papers and testifying in court. Employee is subject to the normal hazards associated with law enforcement work. Works wherever needed, both indoors and outdoors; is exposed to a variety of hot and cold temperatures and may be, at times, exposed to hazardous incidents, and other dangerous situations; may be required to walk, run, climb, crawl, bend, pull, push, or lift and balance on less than ideal terrain; is exposed to wide variety of noise levels, which at times can be quite high; training is carried out at both indoor and outdoor training locations. Patrols an assigned area of the County; monitors radio calls; inspects troublesome areas and checks security of business establishments; answers complaint calls and assists in investigating crimes and disturbances; interviews witnesses; protects the crime scene and gathers evidence; interrogates suspects, and makes arrests; conducts legal searches and surveillances; prepares investigation reports. Performs community policing, as well as crisis intervention as necessary with mental subjects, domestic abuse situations, situations concerning juveniles, civil matters, etc. Processes crime scenes; protects the chain of custody of evidence. Works closely with the Commonwealth’s Attorneys Office to ensure cases are based on solid facts; obtains all documentation to support the charges against the accused, as well as placing information together for the Court’s review; testifies in court on charges placed against offenders; may confer with supervisory personnel for advice in complex cases. Monitors vehicle speeds with radar; conducts criminal and driving checks; issues summons or warnings; operates equipment to determine if driver has consumed alcohol. Prepares various reports and forms such as case files, offense reports, accident reports, tow sheets and cards, property vouchers, lab requests, etc. Provides general public assistance to citizens and motorists by providing directions, or answering inquiries, or assisting with disabled vehicles; investigates accidents; performs first aid; secures and clears accident scenes; performs traffic control at accident scenes, as well as for fires, parades, etc. Serves legal papers such as criminal warrants and subpoenas; explains briefly the meaning of the papers served and makes arrests when necessary. Trains new officers in the field. Maintains assigned vehicle and equipment. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from high school, or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Applicants must meet established medical requirements; be a United States citizen; and at least 21 years of age. Must pass the Basic Law Enforcement Academy program within 1 year of employment. Possession of a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia. Requires annual qualification on the Sheriff's Office Firearms Qualification Course, and the ability to maintain DCJS Basic Law Enforcement Certification. Successful public safety applicants employed by York County must agree to refrain from using tobacco products off and on duty. This job is contingent upon successful completion of pre‑employment checks including criminal history, background and DMV record checks. Supplemental Information Some knowledge of the geography and layout of the County. Some knowledge of civil and criminal statutes on which charges and arrests are based. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, and to write clear, comprehensive reports. Ability to handle sensitive public contacts, and the ability to deal with the public tactfully and courteously, but firmly when necessary. Ability to analyze situations and to adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action based on surrounding hazards and circumstances. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Physical Demands Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including a two‑way radio, typewriter, calculator, copier, etc. Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle and operate a variety of firearms, which involves gripping. Pushing and pulling may be required when making arrests. Must be able to carry a duty belt and other weapons and evidence equipment. There is occasional lifting and/or carrying of tires and debris, or of individuals in a rescue effort. The ability to run and scale walls and stairs is necessary when in foot pursuit.
