O'Connor is seeking an experienced Texas Sales & Use Tax Consultant to join our growing State and Local Tax practice in Houston. This role is responsible for identifying tax savings opportunities, managing audit defense engagements, recovering overpaid taxes, and providing strategic sales and use tax consulting to clients across multiple industries. The ideal candidate possesses deep technical knowledge of Texas sales and use tax regulations, strong analytical abilities, and a consultative mindset focused on delivering measurable value to clients.
What you’ll do?
Sales & Use Tax Consulting:
· Analyze transactions, contracts, invoices, and financial records to identify tax savings opportunities and compliance risks.
· Advise clients on Texas sales and use tax regulations, exemptions, resale treatment, and use tax accrual requirements.
· Research technical tax issues and prepare written analyses, recommendations, and supporting documentation.
· Review operational processes and recommend improvements to enhance compliance and reduce future exposure.
Audit Defense & Controversy:
- Manage and support Texas sales and use tax audits from inception through resolution.
- Prepare audit responses, schedules, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
- Analyze audit methodologies, sampling techniques, and proposed assessments.
- Negotiate disputed findings with auditors and taxing authorities.
Refund Reviews & Recovery Services:
- Conduct reverse audits and refund recovery studies.
- Identify and quantify overpaid taxes.
- Prepare and support refund claims filed with taxing authorities.
- Assist clients in implementing procedures to prevent future overpayments.
Provide consulting and tax planning support for:
- Real Estate Ownership and Investment Groups
- Property Management Companies
- Hospitality and Hotel Operators
- Construction and Development Firms
- Multi-State Businesses
Client Relationship Management
- Serve as a trusted advisor and primary point of contact for assigned clients.
- Present findings and recommendations to executives, controllers, CFOs, tax directors, and business owners.
- Build and maintain long-term client relationships through exceptional service and technical expertise.
Business Development Support
- Assist with proposals, presentations, and client meetings.
- Identify opportunities to expand existing client relationships.
- Support practice growth initiatives and industry networking efforts.
- 5+ years of Texas Sales & Use Tax experience.
- Strong knowledge of Texas sales and use tax statutes, regulations, and administrative guidance.

- Refund Reviews
- Tax Research
- Multi-Entity and Multi-State Operations
- Advanced Microsoft Excel and data analysis skills.
- Strong written, verbal, and presentation abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and client service skills.
Preferred, but not mandatory:
- CPA, CMI, JD, MST, or equivalent professional credential.
- Experience serving real estate, hospitality, construction, or property management clients.
- Experience with tax technology and analytics platforms such as Vertex, Avalara, Alteryx, or Power BI.
- Previous consulting, public accounting, or SALT advisory experience.
