Director of Estate and Gift Planning (Remote)

Abeln, Magy, Underberg & Associates has been retained by The Salvation Army Western Division to recruit for a Director of Estate and Gift Planning. The Director is responsible for promoting, developing and securing planned gifts from the highest level of qualified donors while advocating for The Salvation Army’s mission in Eastern and parts of Central Iowa.

The Director will focus on fostering strong relationships with existing donors and qualifying new planned giving prospects. This position consistently engages with donors and assists them with accomplishing their own vision to do the most good through The Salvation Army. The individual will focus on the greater Eastern Iowa area. Travel with company car is anticipated to be between 25% and 50% (primarily day travel).

Must live between Des Moines/Ames and Eastern Iowa for this remote role.

The ideal candidate for the position will have the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy, CFRE or similar designation preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in fundraising including significant experience in personal solicitation, and familiarity with fundraising practices.
  • Successful track record of fundraising with major and/or planned gift donors is a plus; career track record that shows stability with an organization and a demonstrated ability to develop, nurture and build relationships culminating in major gift success.
  • Additional experience in financial sales, insurance sales, estate and financial planning, or other related areas is desired.
  • Knowledge of best practices in planned giving including all relevant rules, regulations, and programs/policies for meeting compliance with a variety of planned giving vehicles.
  • Demonstrated ability to set and achieve or exceed goals and meet deadlines.
  • Database (CRM) management skills and experience necessary; experience with Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge or Crescendo preferred.

  • Motivate and drive to achieve strong and growing fundraising results each year.
  • Self-starter with an action and results orientation.
  • Ability to prioritize and work on multiple tasks and goals; demonstrated sense of urgency.
  • Strong overall written and verbal communication skills, with exceptional presentation skills.
  • Ability to assert own ideas and work with others to gain support and commitment to achieve the best possible outcomes.
  • High personal standards with a proven track record of personal and professional honesty, integrity, business ethics, and professionalism.
